I bought it because a friend recommended it concerning relocation to Arizona. I haven't finished it yet, but I will, and it is an easy read. Very interesting as I have lived in the San Fernando Valley in California and it has a lot of history of that area relating to just general politics as well as water development and use. A sharp writer, I found the information extremely useful concerning my personal water use, in addition to knowledge about the characteristics of natural water formation and quality. i will be looking at the references for further info on the subject. A++++ I haven't recommended a book to someone in 30 years, but this one I have. I feel it will become a more and more important work in the future of our country. great account of history & politics of western water
this book is a striking account of how the world's largest developed desert came to be - the western US. Reisner's writing is captivating, poignant, vivid. This book changed my view on water resources and water infrastructure, and created a window into the politics that played a part in the creation of the developed desert. A must read for anyone interested in water resources, and especially the Colorado River. The only aspect I wish he had discussed more of were international agreements with Mexico for this precious water, including the Rio Grande which was only briefly mentioned. Overall an excellent read.this book is a striking account of how the world's largest developed desert came to be - the western US. Reisner's writing is captivating, poignant, vivid. Great book to get an insight about western civilization
I liked the book because it offers a historical account of how the western US developed. It also discusses the issues of supplying water to an ever growing population that settled in the desert, where the only way to get the liquid is by bringing it from places as far as the Owens Valley, Sacramento, and the Colorado River. I bought this book because I was required to read it for one of my classes in the Civil Engineering major, but I definetly enjoyed reading it and learned a lot from it. I definetly recommend it.I liked the book because it offers a historical account of how the western US developed. It also discusses the issues of supplying water to an ever growing population that settled in the desert, where the only way to get the liquid is by bringing it from places as far as the Owens Valley, Sacramento, and the Colorado River. good book
Second time I have read this book. First, when it was published about 35 years ago and then recently. I only wish there was an up to date version.
