Childhood memories and WW2
I grew up on titles like G. I. Combat and they feed my imagination about the war. These issues are from before my time, from the early 60s but with fantastic art by Heath & Kubert and others. Sure, it's a little corny and repetitive. A ghost helps a tank get through each battle, a tank that can single handedly take out planes, superior enemy tanks and whatever else the Axis sends their way. A genre that's long gone now, the war was still fresh in the public's mind. Now it seems like a million years ago. I grew up on titles like G. I. Combat and they feed my imagination about the war. 500 pages of ghostly war action!
I love comic books, but I hate superheros (I know, weird, right?) As a kid I loved riding my bike downtown to a greengrocers store (Kennebec Fruit and Nut in Brunswick, Maine) to purchase GI Combat, the one dollar 64-page giant war comic from DC. The Haunted Tank was often the cover story, and I loved the stories of Jeb and his crew fighting their way across North Africa (and later Europe) guided by the ghost of Civil War general J.E.B. Stewart. The stories were always different but pretty much the same, and the dynamics of the small team, led by an officer who spoke to an invisible ghost, felt real and believable. These "DC Showcase Presents" editions reprint complete series in 500 page, black and white volumes, at a very nice price. This one collects 33 stories from the ... I love comic books, but I hate superheros (I know, weird, right?) Volume 2 takes us up to 1972. I started reading them around 1977 or so, when the boys had moved to a Sherman tank, were flying the rebel battle flag and had been lost behind enemy lines for a while. Most of the art is by Russ Heath or DCs war comics genius Joe Kubert, written by comics existentialist Robert Kanigher. Get away from superheros for a while and check these out!
