VH1's musical documentary program STORYTELLERS is a sort of cross between Mtv's UNPLUGGED (an acoustic performance showcase) and VH1's own BEHIND THE MUSIC (a biography-documentary series.) This particular episode tackles the famously controversial psychedelic rock band The Doors, thirty years after the death of their legendary singer-poet, Jim Morrison. With the three remaining members gathered in the VH1 studios, STORYTELLERS delves into the background of several hit Doors songs and brings them to new life by joining more recent rock singers (including Ian Astbury of the Cult and Scott Weiland of the Stone Temple Pilots) with the original band.

Another item for your Doors Collection.
I write this as a long time Doors fan, so it is with prejudice. The Storyteller series on VH1 had been a favorite of mine. It was an intimate setting where a singer/songwriter could play their music and explain the how's, when's, and why's of that particular song. We all know The Doors have not had a lead singer since 1971 as Jim is irreplaceable. The concept of this particular show is wonderful. They found current artists who list Jim Morrison/The Doors as a favorite group or an influence for their music. The Guest Singers: Pat Monahan from Train Ian Astbury from The Cult Travis Meeks from Days of the New Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots Scott Stapp from Creed Perry Farrell from Jane's Addiction Who did the best and worst? It was great to see Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore banter back and forth, even disagreeing on a song's meaning. It was even better seeing them play together again. They were laid back cool. I kept thinking these singers must be so excited. Many years ago when they dreamed of being a rock star and singing to the masses. Did they dare to dream they would be, if for only a few minutes, the lead singer of THE DOORS? For these six men I am sure it was a dream come true. For Ray, Robby, and John, I hope it was great to be The Doors playing before a live audience one more time. I loved it but like I said I just love The Doors.

Doors of the 21st Century
This DVD captures the story behind the songs from the orignal members of the Doors. The music is still as compelling as it was originally in the 60's and early 70's. These timeless Rock & Roll classics teamed with current day singers trying to fill Jim Morrison's big pair of leather pants, for the most part do a pretty good job. Ian Astbury from The Cult toured with Ray & Robbie and was an excellent lead for the group. His hair was Morrison-esque on tour and he wore the mandatory leather outfit but he was Ian Astbury doing Doors material - not a Jim Morrison impersonator. This made the music vibrant and held a new interpretion as does the other singers on this DVD. This is a must have DVD for any Doors fan. My only question is at what point did Robby morph from looking like Andy ... This DVD captures the story behind the songs from the orignal members of the Doors. The Doors members are the best thing here - great value!!
Great overall. The most interesting thing is the members of the Doors themselves, and not the people they chose to sing lead. Hands down the best sounding guy in comparison to Jim Morrison was the guy from Stone Temple Pilots. He had the right "timbre" to his voice, and was aggressive in the right places while remaining a crooner in the other right places. Watching this, it's hard to believe they chose Ian Astbury to tour with the reenvisioned Doors - he has a high, thin voice that is not at all like Morrison, but he DID dress in black leather and sunglasses. An entertaining DVD primarily for watching Ray, John, and Robbie and how they have grown.Great overall.
