Darksouls is still the GOAT of dark fantasy gaming after all these years.
I really love this game!!!! I was hesitant to try at first but by god is this the best game ever made. This game has taken over my life completely ever since I first booted it up to play and has become a strong part of my daily life and how I interact with video games in general. I wish I could buy everyone in the world a copy no one should miss out on the experience of playing darksouls 1. Still the GOAT after all this time and always will be as I move on into the future. Best game I have ever played
I had the game for PC but never got into it that much. I didn't realize how deep of a game this was. Frustrating and nerve-racking at times but whenever you get past a very difficult area you feel accomplished. I highly recommend this game, no PS plus needed for online play. Even if the game is a few years old it is very active with players.

Merciless, challenging, infuriating, but enthralling and worth it
I bought this game because I don't mind a challenge and I love exploring interesting worlds, especially fantasy realms. I went into this game knowing that the series has a reputation of being almost too-hard, and with no real relief (there's a new game plus option, but the enemies scale and change tactics to become as difficult as ever to defeat). Even so, Dark Souls is hard. Very hard. A majority of the game's fans will insist it is "tough but fair," but that only goes so far. The game severely punishes you for mistakes, could benefit from improved hit detection, and has brutally intrusive multiplayer (even if you don't have PlayStation Plus, if your character is alive/human, then other players can invade your game and kill you, and the only way to stop them is to not be connected to ... I bought this game because I don't mind a challenge and I love exploring interesting worlds, especially fantasy realms. Perhaps most painful of all is that when you use either the inventory menu or the main menu in-game, you are still playing and can still be killed. It is not possible to pause the game whatsoever; you have to save at a bonfire (which respawns all non-unique enemies) in order to protect yourself from losing your place. The voicework is, frankly, tepid at best. Much of the audio is softly spoken, so you'd better have subtitles enabled. The exact wording of characters and items can be less than impressive, making you wonder what From Software was thinking when they finalized things. I don't expect a lot of handholding, but being too cryptic can be a real pain. You also have to make sure your "souls" (currency) are stocked to at least a modest degree, in case you need to repair your weapons and armor. This won't much bother Elder Scrolls fans, I imagine, but to some it can come off as needless micro-managing of resources and equipment. There are a lot of good things about Dark Souls, though. It is a dark and brilliant world, with some appealing settings and incredible creatures, it has a pretty solid combat system, and it instills a profound sense of relief and/or accomplishment when you finally clear a hurdle (typically killing one of the bosses).

One of the Best PS3 Games
Dark Souls is challenging, there is no doubt about that. The game forces you to learn the ropes before you start feeling the rewards. There is no hand holding. BUT once you get the feel for your weapons and shield, things get easier. You will die, pretty often actually, but every death will be fair. There are only two exceptions. The Tomb of the Giants can be insanely difficult because you have to trade your shield for a lantern. I won't spoil to much for you, but their is a piece of equipment and a spell that will provide you light and you can keep your shield. The other exception is one area in Anor Londo with two Black Knight Archers. This specific spot is made 100% easier if you are able to summon help online. The combat is excellent. Every weapon feels differently. Every weapon ... Dark Souls is challenging, there is no doubt about that. The game forces you to learn the ropes before you start feeling the rewards. There is a incredible amount of sorcery, miracles, and pyromancy at your disposal. The scenery is absolutely incredible. Every boss and mini-boss looks great and 99% of the entire game has incredible details. Don't let people scare you off with the difficulty. Once you get the flow of the combat down, you will be able to make it all the way to the glorious finish. It took me a good 10 hours to really get a grasp of what it took to survive in the Dark Souls world, but after that it was nothing more than just enjoying the trip. I am on my 4th play through right now. I am not tired of it at all.
