Best of the best
The Munch-Boston collaboration on this recording is superb and the Symphony Hall Organ is unparalleled by anyother recording. Given the wonderful original recording engineering and this reworking for SACD and CD, the sound is even more powerful and detailed. No need to boost bass or raise listening levels where the organ is concerned, lest you damage your speakers. If you have good speakers and a good speaker set-up, the organ will fill the room with amazing, powerful, natural sound. No gimics here, just the real thing! The last movement is taken with a relatively fast tempo per Saint-Saens "instruction", but at a slower pace than just about any other recording I've heard. Conductors try to remain true to a composers intent with a certain amount of limited "plus or minus" ... Fabulous performances of great works and fabulous 3-channel sound.
This album has one of the finest performances of Saint Saens Organ symphony and my favorite performance of the Debussy La Mer. Many people like Karajans performance of La Mer better, but I have a very strong feeling for the Debussy Idiom and I am a lover of the sea and I understand Munch's Interpretation and I can feel the salty air. I can see the sea lights and feel the ocean waves and watch the buoys rock back and forth when he plays. This is an impressionistic piece, but if one is attuned to impressionism, that person will feel the true masterpiece that Debussy has created and understand Munch's Interpretation. The organ symphony is really a wonderful piece and one of Saint Saens' greatest works, and it is very underrated. My favorite interpretation is by Ormandy, Philadelphia Orch, and ... But that recording is older and not as fine in detail as this one. This one has a slight french accent which is quite common in recordings of this work. There is much more to this work than the organ crescendos, but one must listen for a while to notice the strength of the piece overall. I fear my next statement will turn people off, but some of the lilting melodies in this piece were used during sentimental portions of the movie BABE. The added piece by Ibert is not really in the same league as the others, but a wonderful addition, and no one played these lollipops like Munch (except, possibly vintage English conductors like Beecham and Barbirolli). The recording here in 3-channel SACD (rt, center, left) is astounding. Once again, thank you Charles.
