Wide World of Sports - 40 Years of Glory (DVD, 2007)
The title of this video is deceptive. As a longtime fan of this ground breaking sports broadcast I was looking forward to a behind the scenes look at the history of the show. And what a history - they pioneered ways of televising live sporting events that became the industry standard. The sportscasters, especially former athletes, who got their start on WWOfS is like a broadcasting Hall of Fame unto themselves. Instead this DVD is a litany of sporting events of the past 40 years - a listing that has been done better elsewhere. There are only a few, very brief, glimpses of the aforementioned sportscasters who made this show special. But at least it's hosted by the late, great Jim McKay - although the "special feature" tribute to him is embarassing.The title of this video is deceptive. They Should Hang Their Heads in Shame!!
I rated this Good but only because what was there was good. How do you take 40 years of The Wide World of Sports and compress it into 69 minutes?! Everyone involved with this should hang their heads in shame. I grew up watching this every Sunday afternoon. It was a ritual! I loved the memories and wanted to relive some of the fun! I'm 61 years old and I was disappointed in this. I always loved the track and field and adored the ice skating, and was crazy about the skiing. all of which was pretty much ignored. Most of the time in this dvd was spent watching Mohammed Ali, Evel Kneivel, and Tiger Woods. As far as I'm concerned you missed the boat on this fellas! Tell me - Where were the Protopopovs? Where were Toler Cranston, Elvis Stojko, and Scotty Hamilton? Where were Torvill and Dean? ... I rated this Good but only because what was there was good. Where were Dwight Stones, Steve Prefontaine, Marty Liquori, and Frank Shorter? Where was Mary Decker, Evelyn Ashford? Where was Mary Lou Retton? Where was Mark Spitz, Klaus DiBiasi, and Greg Louganis? Where were the skiers and the ski jumpers, people like John Claude Killy, Ingemar Stenmark, Picabo Street, Matti Nykanen? Where were all the other sports figures that ESPN and whoever else had a hand in this dvd felt were not important enough to show? If you didn't have the time or space to put all of them in, then don't make a joke like you've done. I would have rather spent more money and bought all the seasons. I wouldn't even have minded having to sit through John Cameron Swazi again. At least I would have seen the things I enjoyed. There were great people who changed the face of the sport they were in and no one will ever know. So don't even waste your money if you're looking to see some of the greats from years past, they're not there. They're in your mind and that's where they'll remain, because the powers that be don't feel that any other sports figures are important. If you're like me, I did enjoy those parts they did show, like Valery Brummel, for one. I was a fan of his, so it was worth it and that's why I gave it a "good" rating, for what little content that it had.

I liked the anniversary special. It could have showed more of a diversity of events from the 40 years.
