Ahh...My Sweet Rosin Dubh
Thin Lizzy....Ahhhh, now to this listener, things don't get much better than this. To me, the blend of Phillp Lynott's story-telling, poetic phrases and soulful vocals, Brian Downey's unmistakable drums, the twin guitars of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, and the celtic flavor is 70's rock at it's finest. "Black Rose" is no exception. With Gary Moore in the lineup, this disc can't fail. If you're a guitar fan and haven't heard of Gary Moore, I urge you find out. One of finest guitarists in rock and blues, and he has some excellent solo hard rock and blues albums! Beggining with the driving "Do Anything you want to" with its melodic guitar harmony, and a poetic lyric by Lynott, is classic Lizzy with "Toughest Street in Town" keeping the music flowing. The third track, "S&M", has a feel ... Thin Lizzy....Ahhhh, now to this listener, things don't get much better than this. "Waiting For an Alibi" is another story teller, The song written for Phil's newborn daughter is one of the best songs a father has written for his child. If one has a knowledge of Phil Lynott's life, you know what the stuff is that fill has to give up in the next track, "Got To Give It Up". Phil seems to telling the bad side of his self to "Get Out Of Here". "With Love" addresses the weariness failed romances can bring on. The Last track, "Rosin Dubh" (Black Rose) A Rock Legend, caps this album with what must have been Lizzy's masterpiece. I'ts irish-flavored progressions and stirring harmonies moves this listener greatly. Maybe it's because I'm half-scotch, but this song greatly defines the Thin Lizzy sound. Thin Lizzy was already coming apart when this album was made, and subsequent albums were to come, but "Black Rose" was, in my opinion the last album that had what I call the classic sound. If you like the songs on the albums from '74 to '79, I think you will like this underated recording.

This was Thin Lizzy's greatest attempt at a classic master peice. The First 3 songs leave you wanting more of the same, straight a head rock and roll. Then they gp into a mellow kind of rock, stoll heavy on Guitars and Phil's unmistakeable vocals. But it is the last 4 Songs that bring it all home. Letting Thin Lizzy's guitars take total control (as if they hadn't already). Got To Give It Up, Get Out of Here, With Love & Black Rose (Title track) all have their own flair and sound. This is the album that should have made Thin Lizzy as big as Led Zepplin or the Rolling Stones; and in some ways it did. But only spawning one hit song from the album here in America, Lizzy remained a band that was only for fans with a taste for their style of straight ahead rock and roll, and the people of ... Do it your own way. Like the song said, "You can do anything you want to. Do what you want".
