Salvatore Delivers Again . . .
I've been reading fantasy since about 1979, but only recently became a fan of Salvatore. Unlike "The Highwayman" or "The Ancient", which I enjoyed, mind you, but found to be rather slow, IWD moves along at a brisk pace! The characters are vivid (who wouldn't want to sit down with Drizzt Do'Urden over a cup of . . . well, whatever Dark Elves drink??) and the various locations are wonderfully brought to life. Unlike many authors, who seem to spend page upon page trying to convey to you that the forest is dark, spooky and cold, Salvatore manages to do the same thing with a few brisk lines of text. Book arrived quickly in Excellent like-new condition!
Great story. I've read most of this series...out of sequence since they were given to me by a friend. Still, after having read what happens after this trilogy, I want to read and understand how/why the characters' evolved and came to know each other in more depth than following books describe. -Only dislike- the author has a tendency to over decribe, so to speak, the battles. I find them to be too wordy and often skim small battles to the end. Some may find this extremely descriptive, interesting and instense. After reading several battle sections, they tended to be tedious and tiresome. Just my opinion. Otherwise the storyline is fascinationg and insightful to the human psyche.Great story. You can't go wrong ...
... with R. A. Salvatore and the Drizzt novels. If you like the whole "Middle Earth-Forgotten Realms-Dungeons and Dragons" thing, just bite the bullet, buy all the novels, and read them in this order: "The Dark Elf Trilogy", "The Icewind Dale Trilogy", "The Legacy of the Drow", "Paths of Darkness", and lastly (so far, I hope anyway), "The Hunters' Blades Trilogy". All are excellent, but my absolute favorite has to be "The Dark Elf Trilogy". (And yes, even though it was written second, read it first. It's about Drizzt's early years and should be read before "Icewind Dale".) "The Icewind Dale Trilogy" is my second favorite of the sets. They're terrific! Great characters, great stories, unforgettable setting ... you'll like them. Go ahead.... with R. A. Salvatore and the Drizzt novels.
