Developer Infinity Ward returns with its third full installment in the Call of Duty series (Treyarch having developed Call of Duty 3) with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Eschewing the traditional WWII setting that has been the hallmark of the series, Call of Duty 4 takes on the more nebulous world of modern warfare. Nazi storm troopers and kamikaze pilots have been replaced by a patchwork group of terrorists and insurgents, and traditional WWII weapons have been jettisoned in favor of more than 70 modern armaments. Though the story is a departure from the previous games, Call of Duty 4 still features intense mission-based first-person shooter gameplay that should be familiar to fans. The plot centers on two megalomaniacal madmen who are fomenting unrest around the world in an attempt to cement their own power. Imran Zakhaev is a one-armed Russia nationalist who longs to return his country to a Soviet Union style of government by seizing a stockpile of nuclear weapons. Zakhaev has support from several divisions of the Russian army, but, knowing that the United States would quickly come to the aid of the Russian government, he funds a coup in the Middle East to divert attention. Led by Zakhaev ally Khaled Al-Asad, the Middle Eastern coup results in intense fighting which eventually leads to the launch of a Russian nuclear missile toward American soil. Players fight through this chaos as both Sergeant John MacTavish, a British SAS operative doing battle in Russia, and Sergeant Paul Jackson, a U.S. Marine fighting in the Middle East. Call of Duty 4 aims to capture the challenges of modern war by pitting the superior technology of the U.S Marines and British SAS against the cunning guerilla tactics of a terrorist group. In addition to close quarters combat, players will be called upon to perform fast-rope helicopter drops, provide air support from an AH-1 Super Cobra helicopter, call in precision air strikes, and man the turret of an AC-130 Spectre Gunship to engage enemy fighters from the sky. Gamers also join a two man sniper team on a flashback mission in which players head to the Chernobyl Zone of Alienation on a mission to assassinate a younger Zakhaev. Modern Warfare features an expansive set of online multiplayer modes. Players will be able to choose from Assault, Special Ops, Light Machine Gunner, Demolitions, and Sniper classes, or create up to five special classes with customizable weapons and perks. Gamers can then take their fighters through a dozen different multiplayer modes like Free-for-All, Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy, Headquarters, Domination, and Sabotage. Players who frequently battle online will be able to accrue experience points, unlock special weapons and gear, and eventually unlock Prestige Mode in which gamers can trade in their rank for special insignias. The "Game of the Year Edition" comes with new cover art detailing the game's awards, and a token for downloading a new multiplayer map pack.

Good enough to be a gift
Bought this copy for my 25 year old son as a gift. Ive been playing it since it came out and he had played some of the earlier versions on console. The video and graphics are outstanding. Mod maps from outside sources have kept the game fresh. Spawn locations can be aggravating at times since they are set by the game not the player. It saddens me to see the tack that Activision is taking against the PC players by refusing to allow server support in the latest version of this game. I just can't fathom a buisness that would turn their backs on a whole class of players and then when that group reacts to that move by cancelling orders and sending e-mails the company refuses to make any concessions or even promise some form of patch to fix the PROBLEM. Regardless the only thing that really pained me about this purchase was that Activision - Dice would be the ones to profit. I sincerely hope they will consider another version for PC gamers with server support. That is all we wanted from the start.

Game play is great!!!
This game is very fun to play. It has you firing multiple guns,helicopter platforms and helicopter attack gun ships. Lots of attack dogs in this one (be ready). Captain Price and Soap are again playing along in this game brought forward from Call Of Duty MW 2&3. I am playing the Single campaign on the hard level at the time of this review. It is harder to play but just as fun. If you like the other COD games you will really like this one also. I have enjoyed it very much. FRED. This game is very fun to play. Great single person shooter. Best to play on PC bc quicker pointing action of PC Infra Red mouse rather than game console joysticks(they sucks for this kind of game). I only was able to start playing single person mode on 42 inch LCD. Pick a boo action to left & right side on the corner of a wall. Long range sniper scope action(Wabble around like someone is holding it). Affect of Stun Gernade(when u r near)is interesting. Try going near one sometime when thrown. Not! So lucky u can get hit multiple times & heal back after awhile. A.I. are very good.(Well depend on Level U select) Almost feels like they don't want to die either. U can swap guns from dead bad guys(like AK-47). When Gernade is thrown near ur position, u can find & throw it away again. During fire fights, some of the ... Great single person shooter. U only see water coming into the broken ship) Gernade!!!(That's all I heard b4 I died again) This game is very enjoyable first person shooter after get used to the keyboard keys.

I love this game, play it every possible moment online. I haven't really played single player, more of an online person myself. Online multi rocks still plenty of people online 3 years later. Plenty of quality servers to find with great maps and players to play with. Online options are great, even found a program to record my gameplay and post on You Tube!!.... Went with this title over WOW because I am more for the current war games not olden times style war games. Thinking about WOW though.... Definately recommend and call of duty title.I love this game, play it every possible moment online. I haven't really played single player, more of an online person myself. A Novice Gamers Review
This is only my second COD game, and as a single player. But I found it very challenging and with a believable combat scenario. It's definitely not "a piece of cake" to complete it. Even after several times of completing the game it still presents new challenges each time you re-start a New game.
