Good, but sort of a tragic saga, that ends badly. Not an uplifting story.
In a series of flashbacks, this stark tale follows Frankie (Kevin McKidd) as he navigates through a life fraught with difficulty and alcoholism. Frankie's father infuses his child with permanent internal conflict, and in his teens, Frankie acts out in violent ways. As an adult, he comes to a turning point -- he can either destroy himself with alcohol and crime, or try to reinvent himself and possibly find the true love he's desired for so long. == Oddly unordered events tell this tragic story of a guy who just can handle the success of a normal life. He believes he isn't worthy of a better life, and we follow along as he tries several times to make things right and when he finally does, he dies. And I think, the fact that he dies, makes it rather unsatisfactory on ... A good film, though not quite befitting its description
I thought the film was great, honestly. The only problems I had were not with the material itself, just what my expectations were with other reviews and comments that the critics had made about it. It's highly compared to Trainspotting for one, and apart from the fact that it shares a couple actors (not key players, I might add), it's Scottish, and it kind of deals with addiction, it's not quite what the heroine chic audience is looking for, at least that's what I assume. Being a fan of films like This is England, Made in Britain, Romper Stomper, etc., I was looking for a skinhead movie, and to my disappointment, it's only a skinhead film for about 20 minutes, give or take, though the descriptions I'd read on other websites would have you believe ... The film centers on Frankie, a young man in Edinburgh, Scottland who seems to be consumed by a world of violence and alcohol that he seems to have created himself. He also seems to enjoy it quite well, that is, until a skirt catches his attention, causing him to see the errors of his hooligan ways with friends he appears to have only made by default. From the first part of the film we catch a glimpse of his childhood, hanging out in pubs with his philandering father and consuming a bit more spirits than most young lads do. After witnessing his loss of innocence, the film jumps right in to his present state, leader of a not-so-nice gang of traditional skinheads, in a scene that'll have you running for your old copy of A Clockwork Orange. As glorious a representation of skinheads as this is, complete with old authentic skinhead reggae hit's like "Skinhead Moonstomp" by Symarip, and others, it doesn't take very long before it becomes less a hooligan film than it does an addict drama that sometimes hints at a coming of age film. I'll spare you the ending as the film is still definitely worth watching if you're into drama, in general. All in all, a decent film that I am happy to add to the collection, though am a bit disheartened at what I believed to be it's potential to be an amazing skinhead film, seeing as how we keep falling short with every American History X that gets made out there. This is England really impressed me, as being the first (Enlish language) film that dealth with skinheads that wasn't about just Nazis and representing them only as such, but I'm still waiting on something with a bit less artistic "socially redeeming value" and some more piss and vinegar! I mean when your subject matter is essentially hooligans, your film probably shouldn't be fall so short in the action department. Green Street Hooligans was a fine example of how to blend the drama with the grit. Not to mention it would be nice to see a film that deals with non-racist skins in America, someday. Above all, I enjoyed it, and I recommend it. Cheers! -Grimm
