"To the surprise and admiration of their fellows, two officers, like insane artists, trying to gild refined gold or paint the lily, pursued a private contest through the years of universal carnage." Thus wrote Joseph Conrad in the opening paragraphs of the story that provides the basis for Ridley Scott's first feature. During the era of the Napoleonic wars, a conflict arises between two of the emperor's cavalry officers when one of them, the aristocratic Lt. D'Hubert (Keith Carradine), is sent by his superior to deliver the message to commoner Lt. Ferraud (Harvey Keitel) that he's to be placed under house arrest for having wounded a man in another duel. Since Ferraud is with a woman at the time, he takes offense at the intrusion and challenges D'Hubert to a duel. Their match, though fierce, is without resolution. Whenever their paths cross, they continue their battle, fighting a series of six duels over the course of 14 years, paralleling Napoleon's major battles of the period. Scott's meditation focuses on the absurd vanity behind the old European code of honor--and the nature of warfare itself. All the distinguishing marks of Scott's later work is already on display here, from the meticulous re-creation of period costume, decor, and behavior to the lush, carefully composed photography.

Fun movie! Love it!!
A beautiful, fun, authentic swordfighting movie. Lots of realistic duels that professional swordfighters would agree capture the combat styles of the period (mostly rapier/smallsword, saber, and pistol). This film is based on a great short story by famous author Joseph Conrad (wrote "Heart of Darkness" which the film "Apocalypse Now" is based on.) I have read the short story after seeing the film, and they closely resemble one another. I don't know why this film is so unknown. I love martial arts and swordfighting movies, and this one slipped by me for many years. Made in the 70s, it is still entertaining when compared to quality films being made today. I love Keitel's rough, duel-hungry character versus Carradine's good-natured character, who both are bound by fate to fight many deadly duels throughout their adult lives, yet somehow continue to escape death from one another. This movie is both fun and fulfillingly intellectual! "The Duellists" and "Princess Bride" are two movies that I always need a sword in my hand to watch!

Great film: Ridley Scott's first
One of my favorite films. An excellent history lesson in the 18th and early 19th Century dueling culture. Barry Lyndon is another. I wish our politicians would still duel. They wouldn't dare be such lying scum and it could help eliminate FAKE news. Men chose their words much more carefully as it shows in the film.

This is truly a great movie and truly a collector's item especially because it is Ridley Scott's first film and we all know who Ridley Scott is remember ( alien ).. so yes I highly recommend this movie especially on Blu-ray

riddly scott knocked it out of the park with his first movie finally avalible on blu ray this classis has been over looked for years this version has director comentary that is phenomanial the tale of two duelist one who only participates out of honor the other a mean bastard played devilishly well by harvey keitel this one shold not be missed it is a visual blessing they dont make movies like this anymore and it is a shameriddly scott knocked it out of the park with his first movie finally avalible on blu ray this classis has been over looked for years this version has director comentary that is phenomanial the tale of two duelist one who only participates out of honor the other a mean bastard played devilishly well by harvey keitel this one shold not be missed it is a visual blessing they dont make movies like this anymore and it is a shame
