Product Information

Considered to be both a milestone in shooter design and one of the toughest games in the genre, Radiant Silvergun comes courtesy of Japanese developer Treasure. Released only in Japan, Radiant Silvergun offered two modes, Arcade and Saturn mode. The former is all about intense 2D shooting action, while Saturn Mode adds a storyline to the mix and features anime-style characters and voice overs. Radiant Silvergun's most interesting feature is that it did away with the power-up system so prevalent in 2D shooters and instead offered a choice of attacks -- and combos between them. From standard lasers, to split shots, tracking fire, homing blasts, rear attacks, lock-on laser, and the Radiant Sword that can act both as shield and smart bomb, players have to choose the right attack for the right enemy to make it through.

I bought this item because I wanted the best shoot em' up game that there is. Its such a shame that this game was never released in the US or Europe and because of this you need to own a Saturn Console that is capable of running NTSC J region games, this can be done buy buying a Japanese Saturn (expensive but best), getting your countries Saturn modded (good option but hard to find someone to do it) or buy an Action Replay cart (cheapest option but worst output). This game was designed to be played at 60hz and EURO saturns run at 50hz meaning that the beautiful graphics that Treasure spent time and effort on are not as lush as they should be, also the ingame voices appear out of sync with what happening on screen. while on the subject of graphics, I will say now that Radiant Silvergun ... I bought this item because I wanted the best shoot em' up game that there is. This game was designed to be played at 60hz and EURO saturns run at 50hz meaning that the beautiful graphics that Treasure spent time and effort on are not as lush as they should be, also the ingame voices appear out of sync with what happening on screen. while on the subject of graphics, I will say now that Radiant Silvergun does things with the Saturns hardware that was though to be impossible, the transparancies, the textures, the way the background rotates, one of the most memorable bits was leading up to and during the epic battle with Penta, it blows you away when you see the ground getting thrown about as your Silvergun corkscrews through the skys. The amount of action in this game is staggering, you will need to be alert right through the game, the short cutscenes between stages are the only times you will have to catch your breath. Silvergun is FULL of bosses, there are about 20 in the Saturn mode (Saturn mode has a story and more levels)and slightly less in Arcade mode. The game might be seen by some as difficult, this is the case for some gamers but the difficulty is off set with the unique weapons system that levels up each time you play, soon enough you will be completely pwning bosses without thinking too hard (well the ones in the first couple of stages atleast) and you will also unlock rewards such as Show hit boxes, stage select and slow motion mode (so you can dodge bullets easier and workout a stratergy to 100% each boss). One of the other great things about Silvergun is the music, it features a full score by legendary composer Hitoshi Sakimoto of Gradius V, 2004 (PS2) and Vagrant Story, 2000 (PS1) fame. Each piece of music adds to the action with a distinctive style, it adds greatly to the atmospere and drama which this game has in abundance. The story is also well written and very interesting, I'm not about to spoil the plot but what I will say is that it is consistant and unfolds at a steady pace. Although all the voices are in Japanese, the menu's are in English and are easy to navigate and clear to understand. Overall, Radiant Silvergun is the best shoot em' up game ever made, its even unsurpassed some 10 years after it was released which goes to show how well made and designed the game is. Because this game is out of print means that it is very hard to find and with its legendary status means that it will fetch high prices here on eBay, I paid $229.99 in Jan 08 for a Mint Complete copy but a copy that has some scratches/missing the spine card may sell for about £70. All in all, If you want the best and are willing to pay for it, Radiant Silvergun is worth every penny, you can always sell it on and will almost certainly get back what you paid for it, so good luck bidding! Insanely difficult and fun scrolling shooter for collectors/retro gamers
This is a great classic style 2d shooter arcade game. It is insanely fun and difficult. Co-op is a blast. I recommend it to shooter fans who are also Saturn collectors (namely because of the price). It's a shame they never released it in the USA all those years ago. The difficulty makes for fun playthroughs, as every time you can make it a little bit further. I thoroughly enjoy newer titles like resogun, but this is honestly a better game and I think might hold up as best scrolling shooter ever. This may be the best game ever made.
It's ridiculous for me to say something as extreme as "the best game ever made" to be sure. This game's quality really hits you right from the start. Great soundtrack. Fast, fluid action. This game is a blast by yourself, but quickly becomes one of the best gaming experiences ever with a buddy. I really can't rate this game high enough, it blows away current shooters easily and really demonstrates the power of the Saturn. You will never find a game like this for the other 5th generation consoles.It's ridiculous for me to say something as extreme as "the best game ever made" to be sure. Fun game
I wouldn't say it was a good value because I paid a little over $230.00. The game is fun and is one of the best shumps for the Sega Saturn.
