"Energetic, inventive, and ambitious...an uplifting myth born of the sorrows of 9/11."-- Boston Sunday Globe "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a miracle, a daybreak, a man on the moon. It's so impeccably imagined, so courageously executed, so everlastingly moving and fine."-- Baltimore Sun "A funny, wise, deeply compassionate novel that will renew readers' faith that the right book at the right time still has the power to change the world."-- O, The Oprah Magazine

His goal is to find the lock that matches a mysterious key that belonged to his father who died in the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11. This seemingly impossible task will bring Oskar into contact with survivors of all sorts of an exhilarating, affecting, often hilarious, and ultimately healing journey., Jonathan Safran Foer emerged as one of the most original writers of his generation with his best-selling debut novel, Everything Is Illuminated. Now, with humor, tenderness, and awe, he confronts the traumas of our recent history. What he discovers is solace in that most human quality, imagination. Meet Oskar Schell, an inventor, Francophile, tambourine player, Shakespearean actor, jeweler, pacifist, correspondent with Stephen Hawking and Ringo Starr. He is nine years old. And he is on an urgent, secret search through the five boroughs of New York. His mission is to find the lock that fits a mysterious key belonging to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11. An inspired innocent, Oskar is alternately endearing, exasperating, and hilarious as he careens from Central Park to Coney Island to Harlem on his search. Along the way he is always dreaming up inventions to keep those he loves safe from harm. What about a birdseed shirt to let you fly away? What if you could actually hear everyone's heartbeat? His goal is hopeful, but the past speaks a loud warning in stories of those who've lost loved ones before. As Oskar roams New York, he encounters a motley assortment of humanity who are all survivors in their own way. He befriends a 103-year-old war reporter, a tour guide who never leaves the Empire State Building, and lovers enraptured or scorned. Ultimately, Oskar ends his journey where it began, at his father's grave. But now he is accompanied by the silent stranger who has been renting the spare room of his grandmother's apartment. They are there to dig up his father's empty coffin.

  • Buy at your own risk

I found it difficult to maintain interest long enough to finish the first chapter. Someone will get a bargain price on my copy.

  • A favorite book/author

I bought this book for my daughter's boyfriend for Christmas. JSF is one of his favorite authors. My husband collects first edition books as a hobby and we wanted to get the boyfriend started on a collection of firsts of his own. He was absolutely thrilled with the book.

  • Extremely Great And Incredibly Touching.

Jonathan Safran Foer writes in a style not similar to John Irving's, but with the same passion. On any given page you can laugh, and then find yourself crying moments later. It's heartbreaking and it's sensitive, and he portrays every emotion perfectly and realistically, even through the eyes of a nine-year-old. You experience every bit of wonder and excitement and every tragedy along with this boy. You're a part of his journey when you read this book, and it's probably just what you need.

  • Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

One of my favorite books of all time. Very touching story. The first 3-4 chapters might be a bit confusing but just stick with it and I know you'll love it. From the eyes of a little boy, grandfather and grandmother you get the real feeling of love and loss.

  • Interesting book

i had to buy it for my Lit course, but i found it very interesting. It was sort of confusing, but it all made sense in the end. Kind of makes you think about how people react to the 9/11 tourist attack. The pictures are also creepy
