Excellent playing but creepy.
I love Opeth's musicanship - musically one of the most talented bands out there. I also liked them because unlike a lot of other death metal bands, they don't get into satanism (or so I thought) and don't put any graphic or satanic art work on their covers. I thought they were too creative and cool to go for cliche stuff like that. I was really bummed to read the lyrics of their second song on this album, which turned out to be about a guy going for a walk with his girlfriend, then drowning her in a lake as she screams, then admitting the devil is inside him and telling him what to do - lovely. I really like Opeth's sound, but they just got too morbid for me. It's been impossible so far to find a band that makes really heavy and well - orchestrated music ... It's been impossible so far to find a band that makes really heavy and well - orchestrated music that doesn't feel the need to get disgusting, depressing, etc. That's why I 'm looking for a band that is as talented as Opeth, but does just instrumentals. I can't find a band like that either! So, if you are like a lot of death metal fans who are already into morbid garbage like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth, you will probably like Opeth's sound, but the lyrics will actually be way too tame for you - but you won't be able to understand them anyway, so just pretend they are worse than they are. If you are like me and enjoy excellently played music that won't creep you out or ruin your day (basically death metal without the death) don't buy this album. The only band in this genre I can suggest is Lacuna Coil - I've heard some of their stuff. Their lyrics are depressing but not as bad as Opeth, and their sound is even more inventive and sometimes almost upbeat (plus the female singer is hot and has a remarkable voice.) Hope this info has helped you. If not, oh well. Sorry to waste your time. But then hey - you don't have to read reviews, you can make up your own mind, right? It's a free country.

One of the most heaviest and deadly album ever made!
1 year later after the release the great Blackwater Park and it now opeth will go on for its limit THE DELIVERANCE one of the most brutal, heaviest, sickly album ever made and hardly are soft but nothing with heavy instrumental and with mikael's death growl!! I'd say this album is more heavy and compare than their older album like Orchid and Morningrise but still Deliverance it will blow your minds out!!!!!!!!!!!
