In the wake of a family tragedy, an English ex-patriot living in the United States decides to relocate himself and his daughters to Italy, only to discover that grief has followed them overseas when the youngest girl proves unable to move past her acute emotional pain. An Englishman at heart, Joe (Colin Firth) now lives a happy life with his wife and daughters in the United States. Their happy existence is turned upside down in an instant, however, when his wife is driving their daughters home one day and becomes momentarily distracted from the road. Later, as Joe and his daughters attempt to contend with the thick fog of grief hanging over their household, the loving father surmises that a change of scenery may be in order; accepting a teaching job in Italy in hopes that it will help them contend with their bereavement. For teenage daughter Kelly (Willa Holland), at least, the move works miracles: though Kelly was sullen and withdrawn back home, she seems awakened by the endless possibilities that the future may hold in Europe - even entering into a clandestine romance with a handsome Italian boy. Kelly's younger sister Mary (Perla Haney-Jardine), unfortunately, is another case entirely. Despite her father's most valiant efforts to assuage her grief, Mary just doesn't seem capable of shaking the loss. Meanwhile, as Joe rekindles an old friendship with a university colleague (Catherine Keener), his family soaks in the marvelous medley of medieval, Renaissance, and contemporary influences of the scenic, northern Italian city.

A romantic ghost story about two American girls and their British father who move to Italy after their mother dies. Following the death of his wife in a car accident, a college professor (Colin Firth) decides to teach English Literature at an Italian University in Genoa. He is accompanied by his two daughters, aged 16 and 10. The trio occupies a flat in the crowded Genoa streets and soon adapt to the local way of life, taking day trips to the beach and hiring an Italian tutor in musical composition. The elder daughter begins secretly dating a local Italian teenager, secretly making dates with him behind her father's back. The younger daughter remains close to her father, and still deals with painful memories of her mother's death. Herself a passenger in the car when her ... The Professor, while enjoying life in Genoa, has to deal with the demands of being a single parent while also balancing his re-emergent love life. One romantic interest is a colleague at the university (Catherine Keener) with whom he shared a brief romantic relationship back at Harvard when both were students. She tries to get close to the family, helping with translation and their day-to-day needs in Genoa, but crosses the thin line between good advice and intrusion in their private lives in the process. Another romantic interest is a young Italian student in the professor's literature class. She is brash and idealistic and quickly makes her intentions known to the suddenly single professor. Matters come to a head one day when the professor makes a lunch date with the much younger Italian student, unintentionally spurning his much older colleague. The eldest daughter gets into a fight with her Italian boyfriend and is forced to hitch a ride home from the beach. Meanwhile the youngest daughter is left to walk home alone due to the lateness of her older sister and instead follows an apparition of her late mother across a busy intersection, just missing serious injury and causing yet another car crash, but luckily a minor one. The movie ends with the two daughters beginning their studies at a local Italian secondary school, eager to start a new chapter as a family, having already learned a great deal about family, love, and mourning, on the colorful streets of Genoa.

Entertaining but a bit choppy. Love Colin Firth in anything, worth watching

Director Michael Winterbottom's poignant tale of love, family and forgiveness co-stars Hope Davis and Catherine Keener. == A good film, I see why the film was made, it is a good story on the whole, but the film is a bit choppy, and its events take a while to really sink in, and mean something. Of course if you love Colin Firth, you'll have to see it. And of course there are nerve wracking moments in the film, but over all, I think it could been better. Maybe ... Very disappointing!
What a disappointment, I really expected more from the story line but it just wasn't there! Colin Firth is a decent actor, surprised he chose to act in this film.
