WD drives undergo rigorous testing to ensure component integrity and performance. Designed for professionals and gamers, these drives keep productivity at optimal levels. The Western Digital Scorpio Black 500 GB HDD represents a reliable piece of hardware that will consistently deliver results.The WD Scorpio Black Series is a 2.5-inch form factor unit designed for installation in a compatible notebook device. It measures 2.75 by 3.94 by 0.37 inches with a weight of 5.47 ounces. As a hard-disk drive (HDD), it utilizes perpendicular magnetic recording technology to store and search for data on spinning disks. With a seeker head, the disk spins at a rate of 7200 revolutions per minute (RPM). This high-speed 7200 RPM function gives the unit the capability of being consistently responsive to user requirements. The hard drive has an internal data rate of 160 MBps and a drive transfer rate of 300 MBps. In tandem with a latency of only 4.2 milliseconds, the hard drive is capable of rapid read-and-write operations. A 16 MB buffer cache is present for the purposes of storing data locally. This further increases the speed at which users may retrieve data by reducing communication times between hardware components.Black hard drives may be installed via a Serial ATA (SATA) port on a compatible motherboard. It utilizes a SATA 3 Gb/s 7-pin connector as an interface from which it receives and transfers data. It efficiently draws power from the SATA interface as well. Despite its high performance capabilities, it has a low power consumption level that keeps temperatures in check. The hard drive operates at temperatures between 32 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit, helping to keep notebook systems cool. The drive is equipped with a sizeable amount of storage for an expansive array of files, including larger types such as videos and music. With the power of a desktop console, it provides fast read-and-write performance. This helps to ensure that even large files are retrieved in a timely manner by the drives.These drives have 500 GB of space, providing users with plenty of room for data. Furthermore, it’s equipped with an Advanced Format (AF) file structure. This allows it to interact with Microsoft, Apple, and Linux software. It’s able to provide storage for users with Windows 7, Mac OSX, and other operating systems. A multitude of WD technology comes with the drive as well. ShockGuard technology safeguards the unit from damage by protecting the stability of internal components. The model is designed to counter the effects of being jostled around in mobile laptops. IntelliSeek intelligently allocates the unit’s resources according to the needs of the computer, reducing wear and tear. Combined with other balancing features like IntelliPark and IntelliPower, the hard drive is designed for longevity. It can be utilized for extended periods by users. It provides consistent data transference functions with low data error rates.

    For older machines much bang for the buck with the Scorpio Black.

    I have an older mac with the slower hd transfer rate of 1.5 Gbs and was debating about putting in a newer 3 or 6 Gbs solid state OWC drive or this 7200 rpm drive. I bought and tried both and found the difference in write speed negligible 95 mbs vs. 60 gas for my purposes, and the read speed likewise, 155 mbs vs. 98 using blackmagic speed disk software to measure. This boiled down to no noticeable difference for light users like me, not photoshopping, not movie editing, not doing 5 things at once. For my occasional heavier use I like having the Black Scorpio with the larger capacity. Comparison was with OWC Mercury 3g 60gb and this WD Scorpio Black 7200 rpm 320gb, the cost was identical. Running Samsung 830's in my newer macs and without question that is the way to go with them, this ...

    A great Hard Drive

    This is a really good hard drive. It's super fast, super reliable so far. I put this drive in my macbook to replace the 250 gb 5400 rpm drive. I noticed a big performance jump. The only negative thing i have to say is that the new drive is a little louder than the factory drive and I notice a slight decrease in battery life of my laptop. All in all I love this drive.

    Great little drive. Great external, storage drive.

    Great little hard drive. And, I got mine real cheap too! It was used, but has held up well. I use it in an external case. FOR LESS THAN FORTY DOLLARS, I HAVE NOT HAD A BETTER DEAL! If you run across one, dont hesitate to snatch it up, well worth the price for a new one. Performs magnifigantly.

    The best, most reliable spinning laptop drive you can get.

    Western Digital spinning drives are my favorite. This 500 gb laptop drive, running at 7200 rpm is about as good you are going to experience without going to an SSD type hard drive. In fact my laptop is running a 500 gb SSD as a primary drive and this western Digital as the second or data drive so I get both speed and reliability. I would buy another one when needed.     Western digital is the best hard drive out there.

    I used to use maxtor hard drives for a long time and tried hitachi seagate and fugitzu drives for a short time, none would stand up to their warrantys, maxtor was the worst on warrantys had some that were not even six months old and they would not stand behind them,,, soooo i tried western digital and have been using them for over ten years with absoulutly no problems and only had one drive out of over a few hundred that had a problem with and they replaced the drive with no waiting or any excuses. go with western digital and keep your computers and your files safe.
