Xbox 360-exclusive super-cop action continues in Crackdown 2, a sequel to Microsoft's sandbox-style combat-adventure. The game plays out in a near-future urban environment that may be freely traveled and explored. Again, players take the roles of genetically enhanced law enforcement officers, who are part of a squad empowered with the authority of judge, jury, and executioner. These heroes are charged with bringing order to a Pacific City that is overrun with violent, super-powered, mutant criminals, referred to as Freaks. Behind this immediate threat, heroes must also prevent the overthrow of their peacekeeping Agency by the terrorist organization known as the Cell. Equipped with high-tech firearms, melee weapons, and armor, the player's supernaturally enabled agents can gain additional powers as they accomplish goals and gain experience, such as great strength and toughness, enhanced accuracy with guns or vehicles, and even the ability to leap from tall buildings, soaring through the air in extended, rocket-empowered bursts of flight. As in the original game, the adventure is largely player-directed, through a destructible, open-world metropolis full of colorful characters and side-missions, with the threat of deadly danger around nearly every corner. While the first Crackdown was created by Realtime Worlds, Crackdown 2 is the debut release from the Scottish spin-off studio Ruffian Games, founded by Billy Thomson, Gaz Liddon, and other former Realtime developers who worked on the original.

Great budget title for theaaction fan
Being a huge fan of the first game, it was only natural that I pick up #2. I loved how it was still an open world game. You start off with your agency training, which is just a quick tutorial of the games controls and mechanics, and then it turns you loose on the world. This time around, you only start with 4 agents, but you get a choice of color armor this time. Honestly, face doesn’t matter, because your armor upgrades and covers your face. You only have 1 faction to fight, the Cell organization, and at night, you fight the freaks, which mean everyone on ground level is a zombie with super strength and reflexes. I was kinda disappointed in how similar it was to the first one with hunting for agility orbs and lousy driving, but the weapons and AI make up for it. As you get stronger, the ... As you get stronger, the Cell group uses heavier weapons, like grenade launchers and rockets, and their numbers increase in stronghold drastically. The starting weapons aren’t very effective, but as you level up and capture Cell guns, they get stronger and do more damage. You can still use the environment, like cars and light poles as melee weapons and do tremendous damage. I do recommend the Toy Box Add on, as it adds more guns, new armor styles, and an ATV, which has a jump feature and a rocket launcher. All in all, I had fun with crackdown 2. It had its dull moments, but when you are fighting freaks in a lair with only a shotgun, things get intense. Now that it’s a budget priced title, this is definitely a must have for any gamer who like freedom to roam and blow crap up.

First impressions of playing Crackdown 2
If you like free roaming games with a fair amount of destruction and violence, its a pretty good game. I didn't like the first crackdown at all...played it twice and traded it back in. Some friends bugged me to get this, so I did...and i was surprised how much i like this game. If you do get this game, definitely get the toybox dlc...the rocket boots make the game 10x better! There's 2 things i don't like about this game, though. 1: to melee attack, you mash on b...which just feels kinda dumb. 2: The way the guns work...its just...bleh. For example...using a sniper rifle works just like all the other guns and theres times where you'll lock-on onto a character thats far away when someone is shooting at you much closer...anyone that plays perfect dark knows what i mean. Overall, I feel that ... If you like free roaming games with a fair amount of destruction and violence, its a pretty good game. Crackdown 2? Not quite.
Prelude: Crackdown 1 was a fun game, that ran a little short and has the distinction of being one of the only million seller games that was bought specifically for the demo on the disc (in this case Halo 3 beta). However the original game was enjoyable if not all together there. There is the framework of a fun and enjoyable game that could have been released if it was held off for 6 months. And as such the sequel is sure to be amazing. "Story"/Theme: This is not that sequel. Unfortunately Realtime Worlds went off to produce APB which is another game that suffered from similar flaws (namely not being that much fun). However Crackdown 2 is now made by Ruffian Games, and while it's not the sequel that was promised by the potential of the first game. What comes out is still quite ... Gone are the days of having to kill 27 bosses. And now we have 27 locations to take over. In fact bosses are all together gone, and the only thing left is epic battles. Which is something the original game lacked as the player could gain the highest power levels and vault everyone and blow up the boss (who could take multiple head shots with no helmet... go figure). But in addition to 27 locations, there's freaks dominating the city at night. It's almost like a zombie horde, and even better? they walk in the street (free driving skills). The player has to take them out, and while killing the horde is fun, there's not enough power, instead you have to gain beacons, which allow you to create larger bombs to take out the large dens of evil. Once you take over tactical locations you get support in the form of weapons and vehicles (and less enemies), and taking out the freaks lowers the freak numbers but there's still small dens of them that you can take out personally. Overall the idea is refreshing from the first game, but just not that good overall. It's more action, true, but if this was the first game it still would be a disappointment. The Good: Well the new theme is fun, and better. Co-op is a constant blast, they've added 80 orbs that can only be grabbed when a team mate is around. The 500 green orbs and 300 blue (hidden) orbs are back and they are still a blast to capture. And while the city is the same as the first game, it's been demolished quite a bit, so locations are familiar but new. In addition this is the one game where you feel like you're a superhero. Not since spiderman 2, has it been so much fun to fly through a city, and explore. The Bad: There's almost no story (though more than the first game), there's a lack of unique things to do. While the areas of the tactical locations and freak dens are different, they aren't different enough to fool you into thinking it's that different every time. The freak dens are the one unique part, with different locations for enemies, however that only illustrates how un-unique the rest of the game play is. In single player the game just is a little dry (and harder) but in multiplayer the game becomes much easier, but if your other multiplayer buddies run ahead and do all the events, your character might not even need to move from the start location to see the end cinema. With a new character and a friend playing a evolved character, the new character is going to be radically weaker for a long time. Though you do level quickly and it's fine for buddies helping each other out. It just doesn't work when you allow either character to progress in the city.

It's okay, I guess
The game is just kinda... meh. It's not great, and it's not bad. It's honestly just a re-hash of the first game, but done slightly better. Don't get me wrong, whenever this game released, it was AWESOME. The issue is that it just hasn't aged well overall and it's honestly kind of boring compared to all the other titles out there today.
