Art on Stage
David Hockney is one of the most respected and prolific artists of our time. In Hockney Paints the Stage, he applies the wide-eyed wonder and innocence of a child in his famous color palette to stage design applications, and what an experience! It should be noted that some of David's costume work was done by Ian Falconer, David's protoge and illustrator of notable New Yorker Magazine covers and author/illustrator of the best-selling and award-winning Olivia (the pig)children's books. David's mastery of color, and imaginative use of space, creates stages that draw new and younger audiences into theatres as if they came to see a beautiful and dramatic imagination at work. David's design offers a fresh infusion to familiar music. In Puccini's Turandot, for example, the results were spectacular! I will never forget my first experience with that as it became one of my favorite Operas, in part, because of the visuals that accompany my recollections. In Hockney Paints the Stage, the works are beautifully illustrated and an enticing invitation to see a Hockney stage production when possible. As with much of Mr. Hockney's paintings, the work seems almost effortless, but upon examination, or attempt to replicate, no one since Matisse could create such memorable colors and put them together. David's interest in lighting plays an important part of the experience, as well. How color, shadows, costumes are lit has much to do with any theatrical experience. Reviewing the drawings and sketches is an up close look at David's work and seeing the full-scale stage applications on sets such as Tristan and Isolde is a treat! Very highly recommended for those who like contemporary art, set design, and theatre. Rarely is so much quality created with such efficiency! This book is prized by many collectors. I saw it recently at an Art Fair for $165.00 in very good shape!

The Way Life Used to Be was Better Than We Thought!
I know Holland-Dozier-Holland music. I almost wanted this CD to experience the music from a composer's perspective. I enjoyed the music, who could not? I purchased a Diana Ross & the Supremes collection for comparison. What impressed me most, was not this CD! I appreciate music performed by those who write it, but almost surprisingly, but not really, I began to look more closely at Diana Ross! I guess it took something like this, and the new book called Supremes; A Saga of Motown Dreams, Success, and Betrayal, to steep within an amazing moment in American music culture, for me to realize just how special was Diana Ross! Her interpretations and vocalizations, and phrasing, the emphasis, are remarkable! Her voice may not be big and loud, but it has a coronet quality that cuts through voices and rides big sounds such as the bass drive Motown is known for; the hammer and anvil sound of industrial America. I have to thank this review of Motown for adding deeper appreciation for what I instinctively found so appealing in the first place. I must say, however, Diana Ross, despite what anyone my say, was something very special. She owned music that she didn't over sing! Her face and physical presence, and sense of rhythm were synonyms for each other! I guess those of us that hear music, but perhaps may not have a critical ear until they dissect pieces and truly listen, have a better sense of good music than some might assume! I loved Motown music, right in the middle of The Beatles and anyone else! This CD helps me realize just how much!
