High quality recording that rocks the Beach Boys mode.
What I like about this recording is how the Beach Boys were really progressive, when heard in the light of their earlier Surfer and Hot rod hits. I mean this band was just over loaded with Rock 'N' Roll talent. The standout song for me is Dennis Wilson's "FOREVER". That tune alone just got to me many years ago and it still gets me today. Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston all shine. "Sun flower/Surf's Up!" are really rock and roll works of art. It says CALIFORNIA to me. Way cool sounds.What I like about this recording is how the Beach Boys were really progressive, when heard in the light of their earlier Surfer and Hot rod hits. My opinion of Sunflower/Surf's Up
I recently purchased Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys, which I have enjoyed very much, so much in fact, I decided to purchase Sunflower/Surf's Up. Well, the double album Sunflower/Surf's up did not live up to what I had expected after hearing Pet Sounds. Pet Sounds was a departure from the Beach Boy's All American surf, girl and car songs, so I expected Sunflower/Surf's Up to follow in Pet Sounds footsteps. Unfortunately, the Beach Boys seem to have run out of musical ideas by the time they made Sunflower/Surf's Up. I had purchased Surf's Up way back in the 70s when it first came out on vinyl and I remember at the time only giving it a couple of plays, then putting it away, only to sell it to a used record dealer years later. The record didn't impress me then ... I recently purchased Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys, which I have enjoyed very much, so much in fact, I decided to purchase Sunflower/Surf's Up. Sunflower/Surf's Up double album
For those who like the Beach Boys, these are two of their best albums. No real big hits, just decent songs with phenomenal vocals.

Best Beach Boys post '60s Music
Single bar reviewer (understandably) might be rating on Hit singleability. but the Beach Boys ventured into Art/Pop Rock with these two albums. When a band goes in that direction, the desired result is an album that's very contextual; meant to be listened all at once to be best enjoyed. Sunflower especialy will just enthrall you after focused repeated listenings! The group was becoming more democratic, other members writting songs 'like' the kinds of songs Brian was writting. Dennis's songs are fantastic especially "Forever", good as any ballad from Pet Sounds. Surfs up not as strong, but what's good on it (and Sunflower) are some of the very best and most artfully written, produced and performed songs the group ever did. "Till I die" is amazing and better sounding than Brian's post Beach ...
