Stax/Volt Revue - Soul Music/Rythm & Blues at it's best
I chanced to see a few minutes of this DVD on a local PBS beg-a-thon, and found myself watching Steve Cropper & Donald "Duck' Dunn of Booker T & the MG's playing through then brand-new Marshall amps - then I saw Booker T laying down his signature sound right beside them ! Next they were joined by the horn section known as the Mar-Keys & it just kept getting better & better ! Arthur Conley (In the Midnight Hour), Eddie Floyd (Raise Your Hand), Sam & Dave (Hold On! I'm Coming), & Otis Redding (Try A Little Tenderness) all joined the aforementioned back up band to play their popular hits of the day. I enjoyed seeing this concert from 1967 in Oslo Norway because these artists were at their peak playing R&B music - at it's peak ! The young ... The young bands we see playing on late night talk shows cannot hold a candle to these artists. The video quality is great considering the age & limited technology at the time of this concert. I noticed some haloing effect from the bright lights on white shirts on the first few songs, which soon was balanced out. The focus and sound were at least as good as the old "Ed Sullivan Show" DVD's which are out now. This DVD presents 18 songs (Green Onions twice!), and though I think Otis Redding's show at the Monterey Pop festival is better than his showing here - I heartily recommend this DVD. The highlight for me was Sam & Dave's show.

What Was My Favorite Part?
All of it. Ok, maybe the video and audio aren't that great, but the music is. And if you're not all that familiar with R&B/soul music, this dvd would be a beautiful introduction to that genre of music and to some of its greatest artists. Enjoy the clean rhythms, simple but powerful lyrics and the high energy emanating from the stage and from the audience and get ready to SHAKE! In the "Extras" section you can replay the whole concert with somewhat recently added commentary throughout from three insiders including a couple of concert musicians--very enlightening and fun as well. The story of the Stax/Volt tour that follows the concert commentary track is also worth watching and the 24 page booklet that accompanies this dvd is a great read. Hopefully one day ... All of it. Ok, maybe the video and audio aren't that great, but the music is. The concert runs for 75 minutes with performances by Booker T. & The MG's, The Mar-Keys, Arthur Conley, Eddie Floyd, Sam and Dave, and Otis Redding who closes the concert with what may be arguably the greatest concert closing of all time.

Hit The Road Stax
This DVD is truely awesome! The only reason I didnt rate it excellent was because it could have been longer and had more of artists. Sam and Dave are great show men. Eddie Floyd surprised me, I didnt think he would be such a strong live performer. Otis is Legend! Enough said, go get anything Otis Redding, you will never be disappointed.

Watch it for the history and the music!
It sounded better on TV (PBS). The sound quality wasn't that great but it was still a great DVD. You don't see performances like that anymore. It was still worth it. Maybe I got a bad DVD.

If you want to see Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Booker T and the Mg's this is the show to see... The roots of Soulsville USA. Classic concert. Makes you wish there was still good music out there today.
