A great saturday nite feature flick for the family
The best part of this film is the acting. Primo performances by Berenger, Elliott, and Busey. One of the few movies where you can't see Tom Berenger's face through his make-up, he actually looks like Roosevelt. This movie has a lot to offer: wild west action, camp life & training, war action, and plenty of individual story lines to follow. There is also a fair amount of historical data/trivia to be absorbed, concerning the individual characters, their various pasts and subsequent bonding, their actions during the Spanish-American War(not a war portrayed often in film), their weapons, and the effect of the aftermath on various members of the unit. If there is a down side, it would have to be the beginning. It starts out a bit slow until the unit is formed and begins ... The best part of this film is the acting. If one knows that in advance, you can watch a bit more carefully to get better acquainted with the character's backgrounds. Also, at 184 minutes it is a bit long. Perhaps taking a break between disk 1 & 2 for bathroom and kitchen stops would be in order. I first saw this film on tv a few years ago. I had recently seen that it had come out on dvd, and that set a fire under me to see it again. I am very glad that I bought a copy and now have it in my film library. It may not have the sweeping panoramic scenes of a 'Laurence of Arabia', but it does deliver the acting, action, and an interesting story line. If you haven't seen it, get it.

The Rough Riders, complete mini-series on two discs
Excellent action movie. I bought this because I love Teddy Roosevelt and collect anything and everything that pertains to him. Tom Berenger does a good acting job of portraying him, although he is authored as insecure and over-the-top when in reality he was probably the most competent and secure president we ever had. So the writing leaves a bit to be desired, but you can mark that off to literary license and a desire to make the film interesting. The movie is shown through the eyes of several of the Rough Riders, but of one in particular who is just a sort of "unknown" and perhaps a typical one. It is extremely accurate in so many of the details. It has faithfully recreated a pose or two that are well known photographs. Rough Riders also shows the struggle with politics, ... It is an excellent film that will keep most people's attention glued to the screen. Tom Berenger, Sam Elliott and Gary Busey are excellent in their respective roles. Supporting roles by Illeana Douglas, Brad Johnson, Chris Noth, Brian Keith and George Hamilton just help make the movie shine. Action, realism, history, plot, directing all come together in this movie and the viewer is rewarded with an enjoyable evening.

Excellent Movie, Excellent History
I watched this show with interest when it first aired, and I loved it. I had read Theodore Roosevelt's book, and the movie stayed fairly close to the book and the known story. Having Steven Crane and George Randolph Hearst as characters is a nice touch, and Sam Elliot is always great. Best of all is Tome Berenger as Roosevelt. I bought a copy on VHS as soon as it was released, and loaned it to a friend. his comment on returning it was "Where was Tom Berenger?" It took a bit of convincing before he believed me. Berenger is that good in this movie. Good historical entertainment for the whole family.
As an American History teacher for 27 years I found that the movie was very historically correct when it came to the weapon's and uniforms. The story line did take some Hollywood exception's to the actual story, but overall came very close to the actual event's. Tom Berenger did a wonderful job as Theodore Roosevelt. A lot of the movie was filmed in and around San Antonio, Texas where the original Rough Rider's assembled and trained. If one goes to the Miengher (sp) Hotel bar in San Antonio you can have the opportunity to stand in the very spot Roosevelt stood to drink while he was in San Antonio.As an American History teacher for 27 years I found that the movie was very historically correct when it came to the weapon's and uniforms. Good but..
Rough Riders is an excellent production. The only problem is that the subtitles were only in French or Spanish. We needed them in English. My husband is hard of hearing so we use the subtitles as closed captioning. I have no idea why the subtitles were not in English. That made it very difficult for us to enjoy the program.
