As the film opens, Josey Wales is a simple farmer in Missouri. When a vicious band of Union Red Legs, led by Terrill (Bill McKinney), burns his home to the ground, killing his wife and son, Wales joins a gang of Confederate raiders, determined to get revenge. After the Confederacy loses the war, Wales sets out on his own, an outlaw who kills to survive. He eventually meets an old Indian (Chief Dan George, in a wonderfully sympathetic performance) and some other outcasts, and together they seek out a more peaceful existence. But Terrill continues to hunt Wales, and the simple farmer is forced to fight again. Critics did not take Clint Eastwood's THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES seriously in 1976. Today, many consider it one of the greatest Westerns ever made. Here the West is an ugly and brutal place, as it is in Sergio Leone's films, but this is a different kind of Eastwood hero. He has a name, a sense of humor, and a heart. Made in the shadow of Vietnam and Watergate, the film conveys a bitter distrust of government but also a longing to live in peace. Next to UNFORGIVEN, this is the most sweeping and emotionally complex of Eastwood's Westerns.

Eastwood's True Western Masterpiece!
This is the western for which Clint Eastwood ought to have won his Oscars. Deservedly nominated for Best Picture in 1976, the buzz that year was with Copolla's second installment of the Godfather saga, and Eastwood's amazing cinematic masterpiece was ignored. That he was finally recognized for the much-inferior "Unforgiven" is a shameful irony. The western genre was in decline by the 1970s and had largely devolved into cliché or cartoonish parody. The genius of Eastwood's vision was to take traditional western stereotypes and turn them on their heads, demythologize the rigidly black/white good-vs-evil Saturday morning matineé morality, and show us characters with real depth, real motivations and real inner conflicts; not always "good" or always "bad" but sometimes walking a fine line, ... This is the western for which Clint Eastwood ought to have won his Oscars. The look of the film is gorgeous, showing us a smokey, autumnal by-gone world, sometimes crude, often gritty. It's not clear we'd want to live in such a time or place, but we are drawn in nonetheless. Wonderful acting, and a whole passel of great character actors (including the inimitable Chief Dan George) bring the story to vibrant life. There's plenty of action to keep the adrenaline flowing, and the story draws to a logical, satisfying, if artfully understated, conclusion. The score is also worthy of note; spare and expansive all at once, it ranks as one of the best to come out of the 70s. Re-issued on DVD in 2001, this must-have western has been out of print for several years now and is becoming increasingly difficult to find except in some large, expensive anthology boxes. I'd recommend picking it up as soon as you can, especially since this DVD includes a fine "making of" documentary, an excellent companion to the film that you won't find anywhere else. Buy it!

Perhaps one of the greatest westerns ever. The time was the 1860's, and the nation was at war with itself. A simple Missouri farmer just trying to peacefully raise a family is brutally beset upon by a gang of Union ruffians, "Red Legs", so named because of the red stripe down their uniform legs. He was just tending his fields, but for no reason, they killed his wife and son, and they thought he was dead too. That was a mistake. He was an old fashioned man, the kind who "lived by the feud". Another gang of riders happens along as Josie (Clint Eastwood) is burying his family. These are Confederates, led by a man called "Bloody Bill" Fletcher. They are tracking Capt. Terrill and his red legs; they intend to set things right. The die is cast! The pursuit of mortal enemies now begins. In many ... Perhaps one of the greatest westerns ever. In many places along, and just west of the Mississippi river, this is how the war was fought. Eventually the war ended when Lee surrendered. All of the opposing waring factions were made to surrender; typically, to the winner goes the spoils. When Wales's group decided to surrender, they were double crossed and all murdered. Fletcher wasn't part of the plan to hill the men, but Josie Wales thinks that he was. Josie had refused to surrender, but now he swore life long vengeance. The order to kill all of his fellow riders was given by the same Capt. "Red Legs" Terrill. From here Wales goes on the run as an outlaw, hounded by Terrill with a price on his head. Everybody was after the big reward, and no matter where he went, somebody was ready to try his hand . . .and die! Wales teams up with an old Indian (Chief Dan George). Together they begin a journey south towards Texas, picking up other "strays" along the way, including a young Indian squaw, a hound dog, and an old woman and her daughter. The old woman was traveling to a ranch built by her son who was killed in the war. Along the way, the male relatives of her family were killed by "Commencheros", outlaws who traded alcohol, white women, and guns to renegade Indians. Wales rescues the two women, and along with the Chief, the squaw, and hound dog, sets off for the ranch with the old woman and her granddaughter. All along the way, bounty hunters and Capt. Terrill's Red Legs close behind. Upon arriving at the remnants of the town close to her son's ranch, the group befriends the few remaining townspeople. They find the son's ranch and set up as a home for all, but Wales can't relax. He still can see his murdered family, and can't give up his vengeance. Eventually Capt. Terrill and his men show up and a fight erupts. Presumably, all of the soldiers are killed, and Wales chases down Terrill and kills him too. He is finally able to let go of his hatred and settle down again. Good action western that keeps you pulling for the underdog against the Union soldiers.

Civil War From One Man's Perspective
This is my favorite spagetti western!! Called Spagetti because made in Italy with many other movies in a flurry of filming activity, which produced many films in a short period of time. Not great movies, but they have become classics because Clint Eastwood starred in them, and his career has drawn intense interest. A man joins the Rebel cause, because of murder of his wife and child by a Union officer, "Redlegs." His troop fight as long as they can against the Union, and when they are captured, they are betrayed again by the evil Union officer and a gatlin' gun. Jose Wales escapes, and is hunted down by Redlegs, until everyone is shot, but him and Jose. They decide finally that their dispute is not important anymore, and both take lessons away from this conflict that measure the ... This is my favorite spagetti western!! Entertaining?
Yes. A tad heavy in the violence department; a not unusual part of the Eastwood western genre. But chief Dan George adds a touch of not so subtle humor which softens the shoot 'em up segments. If one is an Eastwood fan, Josey should be part of the collection.
