À propos de ce produit

Product Information

With LEAVING LAS VEGAS, director Mike Figgis spun critical gold out of what would appear to be a maudlin and hackneyed premise--a down-and-out drunk meets a hooker with a heart of gold. The reason for the film's success lies partly in its refusal to moralize, but mostly it is the strong performances of Nicholas Cage and Elisabeth Shue that make the story believable and poignant. Ben Sanderson (Cage) is a Hollywood screenwriter who has become an alcoholic. After being fired, he takes his severance pay to Las Vegas, where he plans to drink himself to death. There he meets Sera (Shue), a streetwise prostitute who responds both to Ben's wild antics and to his absolute gentleness. What Sera needs most is to be needed, and Ben needs her a lot. Figgis uses his whole bag of tricks--Sera talks to the camera, the exteriors are shot in grainy 16mm--but finally it is the perfectly-conceived relationship between these two wounded people that drew the rave reviews. The film was based on a novel by John O'Brien.

  • Leaving Las Vegas

By Nick Farina The greatest thing one can hope for in life is someone who loves them, and accepts them for who they are, whoever they are. This is, as it has come to be known, unconditional love. It’s something which has no founding in reason, and to all but those involved it is utterly stupid. Leaving Las Vegas is founded on the principle of this love. Ben Sanderson is a drunk. In the opening moments of the film we see him filling a shopping cart with liqour, singing joyously as he does. We realize this is his life: whereas most people drink to forget their lives, Ben drinks as life. This was obviously onset by something traumatic we never see: Ben is no loser. He has a BMW, and a nice place to live. He does have a job, but in the opening scenes he is fired from it, presumably for ...

  • Haunting and unforgetable

This review is not a plot summary. This movie was mentioned in a class I was taking on religion and pop culture as a realistic portrayal of alcoholism in comparison to Arthur, a comedy. When I saw it on the shelf at Blockbuster, I rented it, and decided that I should own it - not because I would watch it repeatedly, but because I knew I would want to lend it to others. This movie has stuck with me like few others can. Having studied the issue of prostitution and being able to spot when it is being portrayed falsely (i.e., Pretty Woman), I am satisfied with how this story gives a snapshot of the life of this woman mixed up with this man. The story keeps you engaged, and it takes unexpected turns. You will love Elizabeth Shue (Who should have won the Academy Award she was nominated for in ...

  • The movie, "Leaving Las Vegas."

Very moving film. Nicholas Cage does an amazing job of portraying a hopeless alcoholic, who, left with noone to help him fight, throws in the towel on getting sober... surprise interuption in his life leads to love and an unforgetable ending. Emotionally charged, tear jerker. Let us remember that drug addiction and alcoholism is not a choice, but a disease. Noone would ever choose that type of pain. GREAT FILM. Cage is always pleasant to watch!

  • sound quality sucks

  • Set on drinking himself to death!

Carrying on a full movie as a drunk - only a few can do it with pizzazz - and Nicolas carries it off like a champion. One might normally get tired of a full-length movie drunk if he spent 2 hours just - drinking. so what makes THIS movie special is you see the other side of Nicolas in his feelings for his prostitute girlfriend he accidently met in Las Vegas. His compassionate side comes out making Leaving Las Vegas more than just another drunk story...a man you know will die from drinking, but a man you will miss because of his - warm HEART. The real him.
