ANGEL-A follows self-described liar and shady businessman Andre (Jamel Debbouze), who is down on his luck and owes Parisian gangsters money. In a desperate and weak state, Andre finds himself on the edge of one of the City of Light's majestic bridges, ready to plunge into the river below. After one last look around him, he catches sight of a statuesque blonde woman, tears streaking down her gorgeous face, also standing on the ledge just a few feet away. She makes Andre forget about his problems for a moment, and he pleads with her not to jump. She does anyway, and he goes in after her, dragging her to safety. The damsel-in-distress, Angela (Rie Rasmussen), insists on hanging around Andre, doing whatever he tells her, as a way to pay him back for saving her life. Finding it hard to say no to her, and resisting her mesmerizing beauty, he recruits her, somewhat begrudgingly, to help him figure out how to settle his debts. What Andre soon discovers is that meeting Angela was no accident, and that they both need saving, not just from death, but also from themselves.ANGEL-A boasts entertaining performances by Debbouze as the scrappy and quick-tempered Andre and Rasmussen as the optimistic and unassumingly wise and playful Angela. The unlikely pair sparkle onscreen together. ANGEL-A is beautifully filmed, with the black-and-white cinematography capturing all that is engaging and romantic about Paris.

My impressions of Angel-A
One of the best films I have seen in recent years. It is really different, but funny and is so French and fun! A love letter to Paris, France, as well as a standout movie in it's own right. I already enjoy Luc Besson as a filmaker, but this movie had come in under my radar. I didn't know anything about it. So, I rented it at a local store, and so loved it, I had to own one. It is one part, It's a Wonderful Life, and one part modern crime comedy, where this fellow Andre' is hard pressed to come up with money he owes some bookies and other assorted lowlifes he has had the misfortune to associate with, and in desperation, decides to jump off a bridge in the middle of Paris. Lo and behold, he is not alone. A beautiful, and I do mean, BEAUTIFUL girl has the same idea ... One of the best films I have seen in recent years. From there, it becomes a tale of who is she, and what is she doing, and willing to do, for Andre' in return. Cast with only the two primaries in almost every scene, they have to carry the movie, and do they! All the way to the revealing ending, it had me hanging on, and enjoying every minute. It was a VERY satisfying ending to all that as well. If I fault the DVD, it is only in that there is no English dubbed version, so I can stop reading the wonderfully rapid fire, hilarious dialogue long enough to stare at the ravishing Rei Rasmussen, who plays the title Angela. And the lead role, played by the utterly believable and hilarious Jamel Debbouze, is one of my all-time favorite performances. He just owns the screen. I am a fan now. Must seem more of his work! But, whatever you do, SEE ANGEL-A! It is a wonderful movie!

Best movie you've never seen
I'm an organizer for a movie club, and when I first saw this film I knew I had to screen it for the members. When I did, it got a standing ovation. I like to tell people that it's the best movie they've never seen.

Andre instinctively saves her, or so he thinks, and they share their second chance at redemption. Great movie!
This was an excellent movie overall. Lovely scenery and interesting plot twists abound, and it's all topped off by likeable lead characters and a classic black and white backdrop. Anyone who's interested in classy foreign films should definitely check this one out!
