Fried laptop CPU? No Problem!
About a week ago the Celeron 1007U CPU on an old Dell Inspiron 3521 laptop I bought in 2013 finally died. Thought I’d lost my data as I couldn’t turn the machine on. So I ordered a refurbished Dell Inspiron 3521 Celeron laptop (came with same features except it was a 1017U CPU).
When it arrived, I removed the HDD and replaced it with the HDD from my old laptop, changed the boot settings by pressing F12 during boot, crossed my fingers...and it worked!
I can’t believe it. I’m backing up family photos right now.
I tried to find on the internet whether you could swap HDDs and every answer was effectively, “Theoretically, yes, but it has to be configured exactly the same, so practically, no, you can’t.”
Well I have proven that it can be done. One good reason to buy mass-produced machines right there. Just like mass-produced cars - the parts are easy to find. I’m a fan of Dell computers. I know, I know, that rig you built with 4x the power at 1/4 the price is sick, but Dell machines are upgradeable and parts easy to swap.
