ASUS ZenWiFi AX Whole-Home Tri-Band Mesh WiFi 6 System XT8
17 avr. 2021
Powerful Improvement Over Basic 2.1/5.2Ghz Wifi
My macbook pro browser performance was inexplicably slow on startup and when I switched to tethered mode on my iPhone, it would work fine. I had time machine 5.2Ghz wifi in the living room, about 5 yards away. Something just wasn't working. ASUS ZenWifi resolved the issue. I don't have any wifi6 devices, but dual-node system is itself a wifi6 device, which made a difference right away. I installed the router node in the garage and the unwired node unit in my office, up one floor and on the opposite corner of the house, separated by a 20 year old subzero refrigerator, a furnace, two streaming devices, and lots of personal gadgets. Out of the box, it worked immediately as a bridge, using an ethernet port on the node unit to plug in my compuler without using wifi., One of the nodes had out of date firmware. The Asus server timed out when I triggered the upgrade from the iPhone Asus Router app, so I downloaded the firmware from Asus on my mac. It recommended verifying the MD5 signature. I went to the web admin console from my browser, and I tried triggering the upgrade from the device again, and this time it worked fine, took about 15min, and I didn't have to check the md5 signature. It solved the problem of web browsers acting sluggishly on my macbook pro on startup. and across our mobile devices. Speedtest.net scores went from 9down 2up to 28down 9 up with better latency. It's hard to describe it but browser applications have a tendency to be very chatty in the background, and this is no longer causing issues like web pages that give up and die while loading. The device configures itself out of the box with a brief setup routine, although there is full access to various advanced configuration options. The iPhone app let's you see real time data transfer rates, put a name on every device that is connecting and, if I want, throttle bandwidth selectively on a device-by-device basis. The user experience is excellent compared to typical web based configuration consoles, and the important configuration process is completely automated. I chose this based on a product review in PC Magazine and reports of configuration challenges with other devices from Asus and other mesh wifi vendors.
