    The Way We Were!
As a camera buff I enjoyed this book very much. You think you are buying it for the photographs taken by that great old large format camera but as you begin to read you absorb a well written history detailing much about society as it was. Lots of great images that were all published in papers back in the day. Well researched and well presented.

    Maxxum
The maxxum uses minolta glass so the image is going to be fairly good. And it's very easy to use in that it threads the film and controls all aspects of the camera automatically. But the camera is very light and inexpensive, originally. Dare I say it? It's a cheap camera that can take some good images. However, because of the age the electronics tend to fail and it costs way more to repair them than to replace them. They are so cheap on ebay you can simply buy a new one until you get one that works and keep on shooting. The primary drawback for this camera from a technical viewpoint is it's virtually total lack of control. An experienced SLR shooter is accustomed to being able to control the aperture and shutter speeds, the depth of field, and so forth. The Maxxum 300si has some program modes that can be used but that's it. The camera still makes all the decisions. If you understand the SLR you can use the program modes to get a wider or tighter aperture and so forth but exact control is not there. It's a cheap camera that gives you the advantage of being able to change lenses like an SLR without having to learn how to use an SLR. If you have SLR skills you may be able to tweak more out of this camera than the average joe. But the glass is ok and as we all should know, it's always more about the photographer and what and how they are composing their photographs than the camera. Cheap cameras and can make fabulous images if they are used well. I like mine and use it on occasion.

    Minolta XE-7 35mm SLR
Many believed that this was the top of the line for the x series even though it did not have program mode. The XE-7 is a serious 35mm SLR with metal shutter, timer, smooth film advance, a double exposure control, manual & aperture priority control. It was built in conjunction with the German maker Leitz which caused many to feel it had some sort of hidden quality edge. If it's there, then maybe it's in the shutter otherwise it seems to be your standard Minolta X series camera with some of the features of the X-700 but not all. It accepts all the old Minolta manual lenses designed for MC and MD mounts. Plus a host of third party lenses made for the same mounts. For those who like using tripods it has a knob which shutters the view finder and keeps light from leaking in that path if your eye is not covering the finder One weakness is the meter system, the old XE-7's are known for getting jumpy light meters as they age. Mine seems to be stable. I also believe the XE does not have the TTL option for flash control. To me the draw-down of possibly getting a shaky metter and not having TTL flash control of the X-700 would mean I actually prefer my X-700 over the XE-7. The loss of program mode could also be important for those who would want the camera to make all decisions regarding exposure and simply turn it into almost a point and click that you only have to focus. It's a great old camera like all the Minolta X cameras.
