Sprung EZ Mates vs. Wand EZ Mates on Hawthorne Village cars.
Real springs instead of little bendy plastic wands in the uncoupling mechanism are essential. I'm learning that I will eventually have to replace all my wanded EZ mates with the ones that have real springs. Hawthorne Village started using the cheapo wanded ones several years ago, so look closely before you buy what seems like a reasonably priced On30 car on ebay, TRAINZ, Amazon, or in your local hobby shop. Best I can tell, Bachmann still provides decent couplers on their RTR On30 cars, but those have become pretty expensive, new or used, for those of us who repaint and reletter for our own roadnames. Buying Hawthorne "collectors' series" cars is a much more economical way to build your On30 fleet.

Rating the Bachmann Forney
Excellent detail, though this loco basically just rides on the 4 driving wheels, with almost no weight on the pony truck or the rear truck. As such, it has a tendency to derail if running fast or running over imperfectly installing underlying track. But if you're modeling Maine 2 footers in On30, or if you just like Forneys, this is your best bet. FWIW, I now own 6 DCC Bachmann Forneys, all programmed with low top speeds.

Good for Hawthorne Village cars.
Most of my On30 cars are cheap Hawthorne Village cars, bought used, repainted, and decaled for my own road. Some of these cars came with cheap EZ Mates -- the ones with no spring, just a tiny plastic whisker that breaks easily. Make sure you replace them with these -- the more reliable over shank version with real springs. #8022
