1990 VW Jetta 4 dr Diesel

I have been looking for a VW Jetta diesel for comfortable transportation with very good fuel mileage. I owned a 1982 Jetta about 15 years ago, and it was the most comfortable vehicle ever; it was reasonably peppy, excellent fuel economy, very reliable and practical. I expected to repeat that experience. This particular car, while generally acceptable in appearance, has a leaking heater core. The core itself is inexpensive, perhaps $50. However, replacing the core requires discharging of the air conditioning system, and then complete removal of the dashboard assembly, in order to access the heater core. Because there is so much labor involved, this is a very expensive process, if the work is performed by a repair shop; my estimate is approximately $800 to $1000. One would, therefore, be unwise to replace just the heater core, but should also replace the air conditioning evaporator coil, which is approximately $150 in parts. Most "new" cars have this same disadvantage, in that the heater core is buried in the dash. Further, this particular car was down on power, and not just slow because it is a 1600 cc VW diesel. I didn't run a compression test, but I'd be very surprised if this engine produced more than 350 to 375 psig at cranking speed, when it should easily be in the range of 420 psig. This engine is worn, and should to be rebuilt. The owner touts good fuel mileage, and I have no reason to doubt his claim. VW Jettas are very good small cars, and the diesels provide excellent fuel economy. This particular car is not a good representative of the breed.

This throttle return spring bracket is very nicely finished, and is a good, functional unit. This one is a genuine Holley product and as such is of high quality. It fits without interference. The two return springs are a little too heavy for my taste, but the tension is easily adjustable.
