Leos Janacek: Glagolitic Mass, Sinfonietta - Jiri Belohlavek, Czech Philharmonic

Powerful, gripping, radiant and emblazoning Slavic works.

Faithful, strong and at times exhilarating performances conducted by very reliable Jiri Belohlavek and a scintillating Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Good sound - clear and at times more spirited than at others. I personally like a "rougher" and more piercing Janacek, especially in places where the fiery brass and organ and chorus surge. But I am happy and will be listening to this CD again - soon. For the Glagolitic Mass I also recommend Karel Ancerl, Rafael Kubelik, Sir Charles Mackerras, Antoni Wit, Bretislav Bakala and Jilek with the Brno orchestra. For the Sinfonietta, I really love the spirited performances of Tibor Ferenc, the first Claudio Abbado, Vaclav Neumann (both performances) and the Mackerras on BBC. There is also a fabulous organ transcription of the work. Incidentally, Abbado also did a "love" performance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra - a genuine classic!

Sharif is one of the best "Peters" one could ever imagine - like an Albert Schweitzer of our time.

Omar Sharif brings out Simon Peter's passion and compassion as a trailblazer for Christ. Sharif plays Peter with heart, soul, strength, intelligence and great faith in the Lord he serves. His is a believable Peter, willing to lead and follow as directed by his Lord and by his own inner courage. His stalwart loyalty to Christ and his love of people, even his enemies, shine brightly.

Reverent, joyous and inspiring.

The Sixteen are always fabulous - so together and clear sounding, and Harry Christophers is a great conductor.
