A lot of portrait bang for the buck
I had to think on the value question. The Nikon 105/2.0 DC is a great portrait lens--and I got it for a very good price, so it was a great value for me. I have lusted for this lens for many years. Most of the time, this lens can be quite expensive lens in the used market (and we won't talk about the new price). I'm still learning how to use the defocus control, but that's a nice challenge. I certainly recommend the lens--just shop carefully!

Buy it Used
--Haven't really given it the full run-through yet, but the 24-120/F4 appears to be what I need for my uses and an improvement over previous models of this lens. I have owned both of the previous 2 versions. Even though I have eyed this lens for the several years it has been out, I refused to pay the "new" price because the lens is just not worth the $1K+ that is retails for--at least for me. It's a much better value used or refurbished. This will be both a great travel and event lens with the constant F4 and wide-to-portrait range. My previous-generation copies worked well in those departments (and were not quite as bad as one might believe reading internet posts). I will use it alongside my older 2.8 Nikon zooms. It's always nice to have a "back-up" at a shoot that covers a number of focal lengths.

Work well for me on older Nikons.
I had looked for these for years. They are generic brand, but they work well on my two Nikon F bodies. They also work on my Nikkormat FTn, but there is a little overlap since the PC sockets are so close together on the NIkkormat. Minor filing on one side of each cap would remedy the issue if needed.
