European views of the American Civil War
I did not realize this book was written in 1959. This is the 1988 edition with an updated preface. I don't usually read books on the Civil War more than 15 years old because there have been so many changes in scholarship, but this was worth reading. The author did an excellent job of reviewing and interpreting how Britain, Prussia and France treated the war and incorporated or, for the most part, failed to incorporate its lesson into its tactics and strategy. The dramatic increase in firepower that caused a change in tactics was overlooked and misinterpreted for the most part. The Americans failed to use cavalry for a charge en masse, instead dismounting and fighting on foot. The Europeans argue over this for another 50 years. As late as 1907 they were still arming cavalry with lances. Ultimately the Europeans, via Fuller and Liddell Hart, realized that there was much to learn from the Civil War and that it was truly the first modern war.

    Excellent Tribute Album
I consider this a tribute album, and I think it is one of the better ones. Rather than having many artists each do one song, this album features three leads and they take turns as lead singer, much as the Beatles did. That format provides variation but also consistency. In addition, the songs are Lennon McCartney rarities, some of which you will recognize as hits from early British Invasion groups who had been given songs churned out by John and Paul. Most tribute albums leave me wanted to go back and listen to the original, but this one stands on its own. My only regret was that it did not include a cover of "One", a Lennon McCartney song covered by Three Dog Night. I highly recommend this CD to anyone interested in the Beatles.
