Howard Finster: Stranger from Another World
This is a good book for those who want to learn more about famed folk artist Howard Finster. This book tells Finster's life story in his own words. Seeing things from his perspective gave me a lot more insight into why he painted some of the things he did. It goes beyond the typical descriptions of Finster's life and work. It is also illustrated with many color photos of his work.

Great Reference Book
This is an out-of-print but still valuable guide to identifying and dating antique and vintage quilts through the 1950s. It is somewhat technical but contains a wealth of details about who made quilts, why and how they made quilts, and the materials used in different time periods.

Fact-based book about the lives of slaves
The author did a great job of using legal documents, planters’ journals, and WPA interviews with former slaves to debunk common myths about slaves and slave owners. The book also looks at life for freed slaves after the Civil War. Scholarly but very interesting.
