The Archetypical Dungeon Crawl
Before Diablo and Dungeon Siege, before Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate, people got their dungeon crawling D&D fix by playing the games made by one company: SSI. The Eye of the Beholder series, Menzoberranzan, Pool of Radiance ... all of these were the staples of the dungeon crawl genre back in the late 80's and early 90's, and Eye of the Beholder was one of the finest, at least for me. I originally played this title on the PC, and the Sega CD port of the game is letter perfect. The soundtrack is nice and eerie, the game is well balanced to be challenging without being impossible, and the mechanics are easy to master. You start with a party of 4 characters which you roll up D&D style and you can pick up more on your travels, and of course there are a plethora of items both magical and mundane to equip your party with. The only real drawback to the Sega CD version is playing with the gamepad; thankfully the Sega Mega Mouse isn't hard to find (or very expensive) if you want to play it the way it was meant to be played. Overall, this game on the Sega CD is a fantastic port of a classic PC RPG, and it's a trip through classic gaming that every gamer should experience.
