The Ballad of Narayama DVD Shohei Imamura(DIR) 1983

Narayama is to ballads what Shakespeare is to plays.

Brilliant overview of family life, in the restrained circumstance of life in a small mountain village. Opening scene perfectly illustrates the difference between modern sensibility and contemporary times. All of society is on display in this exquisitely portrayed drama which examines a mans fidelity to his mother/ancestors, when challenged by prevailing social mores. Beyond that, one cannot help being drawn into the challenge of perceiving where and how they would fit in similar condition. Highly recommended for the production values alone, which are second to none.

Timeless character makes for ageless storyline.

Beat Takeshi confirms his genius in this delightful take on a legendary Japanese fiction hero. Great fun for everyone, with a superb soundtrack, lots of action, and an honestly awesome dance number capping this extraordinary film. Entertains everyone !
