Universal Appeal for An Enthralling Jazz Rock CD
Few guitarists in the rock band category can play the guitar with such clarity and perfect syncopation while bending a note, as Neal Schon can. In Journey's early days, Schon was allowed to Shine, and often incorporated jazz influenced guitar into the rock mix during solos. As their catalog became more pop focused, Schon looked for another way to branch out. Bad English didn't allow for much individual creativity, but Schon's solo albums did. "Late Nite" was released just as Schon left Journey to join Bad English in 1989. Cleverly assembled, the album has a latter-day Pink Floyd flow to it, and that would include subtle choir backgrounds and soaring ballads. Not exactly an instrumental cd, since it has about four songs with vocals in them, but the vocals were never meant to be the main focus here. Instead, Schon writes prolific inspiring rock runs with clean guitar licks, no fret squeaks, no sloppy chord progression. A couple of the David Gilmour albums have this kind of feel to them: instrumentals mixed with vccals, and anthem-oriented ballads and melodies started softly then finished with strong emphasis. Virtually ANYONE could listen to this cd and like something from it. It's also not the kind of album that people would usually object if you played it in the background, or even foreground. It has universal appeal, and I think that is what some quote-Great-quote rock albums have that distinguish them from the also-rans. Schon has really done something special: Do yourself a favor, and get this CD. Jeff Feezle of Macafeez

The Brave One starring Jodi Foster
If a producer wanted to remake “Death Wish” (the ultimate vigilante movie) in today’s terms, he could go one of two ways: Either overexploit the violence, or redo the movie with another type of lead character: perhaps one that is softer, more believable in the title role. Jodi Foster has both characteristics. A chameleon of sorts, she is equally adept at playing both sides of the coin. In “The Brave One” (inappropriately named, by the way), Foster tries to foster more than just a revenge motive for removing the bad guys. Instead, she gets caught up chasing her own stoic shadow from vengeful murder to murder. From a purely watch able standpoint, the movie moves along with an evenness and steady pace. It is punctuated by some hinky overdub dialog by Foster as she underlines and bolds certain points to the audience. The first viewing of this movie may or may not evoke the feelings the director tried to convey, but a repeat reviewing will more than likely be seen as slightly annoying on several aspects. Foster’s character maintains a pronounced sadness all throughout the performance, easily enough actable, but doesn’t carry the depth to fully motivate the viewer into a real sense of empathy. Far too many times, Foster is put into scenes where tragedy forces her hand, but of course, in her hand is a gun. Terrence Howard is stupendous, however, and should command top dollar fees for his next acting experiences based on what he conveyed in the “Brave One.” The interplay of the two is understated, and is full of eyebrow raising and lowering. Both souls are connected by the necessity to put to rest the evil that poisons each persons home town. One defends the city, the other defends her sanity. The end result is a movie that won’t leave you feeling good, but will probably define for watchers what many crime victims feel they could do, at least initially after a brutal attack. The resolution for fighting extreme evil is often to combat it with an equal bluntness, and disregard for rules. Jeff Feezle of Macafeez

Robin Trower & Procul Harum's Reid In a Groove!
Robin Trower has long been known to rock guitar fans as the ‘2nd Jimi Hendrix’. The thing that makes Trower’s cd catalog interesting is that most of his titles are no longer available! They are either cut out or out of print except for the compilation cds and “Bridge of Sighs.” James Dewar provides the distinctive vocals while Robin provides the licks. “B.L.T.” is a collaboration effort with Terry Reid from Procul Harum fame and the Jack Bruce, the legendary bass player of Cream. All three fellows weave a tapestry of rock magic that shines on the cut: “Carmen” and “Life On Earth.” All in all, this is a must for Trower or Jack Bruce fans. I would rate this 3.5 stars out of 5 since it is uneven at times, but still has intensity, verve, and superb talent. If this review was helpful to you, please click the button below! Thanks!
