Excellent performances from the top on down, plot straight out of Melville--but the production a little ragged. If made today with the same people, it would be a lot funner to watch.

Though it definitely had its moments, and Kirk Douglas's performance was inspired, the film wasn't as good as I remembered it. One-dimensional, schlocky.
