Sicilian Splendors: Discovering the Secret Places That Speak to the Heart: New

Ok, not compelling

I like the fact that author highlights less known town and areas of Sicily. He often shows the warmth and hospitality of the people so many typical tourists will never encounter. For many people, those are some of the most important factors to having an authentic experience when traveling to any other culture. However, the writing is not so compelling in bringing those factors to life. It seems much more like journalism, which is the author’s background. If someone has a particular interest in Sicily and the time to explore the off-the-beaten-path subject areas, this book could be valuable. For those who’ve read a lot about Sicily, it won’t provide any great surprises.

Camus: Compelling, Lyrical

I have read The Plague and studied it in grad school but lost my copy. It is a compelling work, with Camus' usual lyrical prose. I lost my copy and wanted to replace it but ordered this PDF version by mistake. Don't want to read Camus electronically as his writing deserves to be lingered over. Anything by Camus is worth reading for its humane treatment of various subjects of modernity. Dr. Rieux, the main character in The Plague, battles on doing what he can as the plague ravishes his town. He is a hero of existentialist literature demonstrating how we cannot count on god in an absurd world to save us - we must save ourselves and each other. Camus always denied being an existentialist but did write in that vein.
