A dissertation about the minimus 7w’s place in the min7 family
While the classic minimus 7 enclosure is made of cast aluminum, this one is constructed of 1/4”-1/2” pressed wood coated in pretty wood veneer. This sounds like a disappointment waiting to happen, but far from it! The mighty minimus 7 remains mighty, and with its removable cloth grill and wooden design, this appears as a cute miniature bookshelf speaker from the 70’s or 80’s.
Is it greater or less than the metallic sibling? The 7w (wood) is very similar in its sound signature and could be arguable better in some regards - lack of edge induced diffraction (when grills are removed), increasing staging and imaging potential, and flattening the frequency response peaks a little. The bass also receives a bit of an acoustics trick-boost in that the enclosure is more flexible and will create its own lower register sympathetic resonances, whereas the aluminum enclosure tends to resonate much higher, causing ringing and smearing of musical notes, ever so slightly. These differences would only be apparent to the trained ear.
On the downside, the enclosure is porous in nature and incapable of a perfect seal, like the aluminum 7’s, which could cause the slightest variances in frequency response and lower register transient responsiveness and speed. Spectral decay may suffer in the lower registers in exchange for slightly greater apparent bass extension.
The biggest downside to these is that the acoustic centers of the tweeter from the woofer are greater by design than their aluminum enclosed siblings, causing less off-axis response accuracy and in room coherency. They also are made of pressed wood, so ANY moisture will destroy them, and they cannot handle having screws inserted and removed more than once or twice without needing serious treatment to make the screw holes efficient and useful once more.
In short, if you are a mad minimus 7 collector like myself, at least one 7w pair should be in your modded (or even unmodded) collection. If you’re only going to buy one pair and expect the best, get either the Japanese minimus 7 Silver with the metallic tweeter faceplates or the last Japanese made black or white models with the plastic tweeter faceplates. Those are the best minimus 7’s overall, from stock sound to modded, (upgraded circuit with original drivers, acoustic treatment added), that you can get your hands on for inexpensive audiophile bliss!

Enter the elite realm of amplification
This amp is perfect for any audiophile, seasoned or new in their listening journey. It is made of top quality components and design, just a little less power output than its big brother the hca1000a. Enter the elite realm of amplification with this beauty. I’ve heard Focal Utopia Mezzos powered by the hca1000a, and they sounded better in that matching than with much more expensive Odyssey and Pass Labs amps! Very happy with the hca750a!

Killer sub for the right price
This may sound insane, but these little things are quite musical. I get a Lepai or Ethics Sound 2.1 plate amp and install that, use these as 2.1 for Zilch modded minimus 7’s. These are like the minimus 7 of subs. Inexpensive, doesn’t look like much, but seriously packs a punch when setup right. I cross at 30hz. Yes, 30. It is a gradual slope and this thing can dig deep, in the right setting, into the 20’s. Light as a feather but each component designed with precision for one another, this is a little beast. Love ‘em!
