High Precision Magnetic Pocket Transit Geological Compass Scale 0-360 Degrees

Lightweight, functional and good value but requires a very steady hand.

This compass is a surprisingly good compass and inclinometer modeled after the Brunton pocket transit. It is much lighter. The on I received was well balanced for North America. The needle is not very well damped and is very jittery unless you have a very steady and or can set it on a level and non-magnetic surface. It you do that you can get readings accurate to 1 degree in azimuth. Because the needle jitters you must also take care when using the needle lock because the needle can easily jump up to five degrees while locking. You have to lock it slowly without disturbing the needle. THe declination adjustment functions very well. The mirror is adequate but is plastic. Mine has a slight orange peel appearance to it and a small dent that causes a slight distortion on one side. Even so I was able to make multiple azimuth measurements that exactly matched those made from know survey points to within one degree. Still considering what a real Brunton costs this provides similar function a a tiny fraction of the cost. Its a good leaning tool, accurate if you use it correctly and a good value for the money. Shipping is all the way from China so it takes a few days but is also quite cheap and reasonable for what you pay.
