Guilty pleasure (if you are a fan of adventure genre)
The second entry in the "Quatermain" series is mostly a step backward in comparison to the already flat, but enjoyable "King Solomon's Mines" (1985). While the first movie hangs the bar at same level on campyness, modest budget and cheesy action, this sequel lacks the rythm, dumb comedy feeling and fast-paced narrative given from a crafted director like J. Lee Thompson. However, there are some moments enough to please hardcore fans of adventure genre "a la Indiana Jones" style. Muddy and slightly pointless in the second act, some freaky elements and characters provide the funny parts, like Henry Silva on wig as a bizarre mad priest and Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson as a curvy evil queen. Perhaps the most remarkable attribute is the charming presence of a very young and sexy Sharon Stone at one of her first works onscreen. Low expectations are the key.

Stylish statement on sex and female empowerment with graphic scenes.
More an statement than an actual movie, the film follows the thoughts and feelings of Marie, a young schoolteacher, in a radical embracement of the dissociation of desire from love that leads to topics of female empowerment on pleasure and sex behavior. Beyond some interesting, raw and sincere reflections on the women's quest in contemporary relationships and its stylish cinematography, this film earned some worldwide attention at the time of its release mostly for its crude language and graphic scenes that heavily rely on the brave performance of french actress Caroline Ducey, testing the limits on the explicit depiction of sex and nudity in a non-pornographic movie. Awkward and umpleasant to watch at some scenes, "Romance" is a cinematographic experience that worth the view and analysis beyond form and style.
