About the book
1 personnes sur 1 ont jugé cet avis utile. If you're into collecting (or simply appreciating) Canon rangefinder cameras, this book is an essential read. Dechert presents a nice historical review of the the people responsible for bringing the earliest cameras to market, then proceeds to provide detailed descriptions of all the rangefinder cameras. Some time is also devoted to a comparison with contemporary Leica cameras (what most, if not all, screw mount cameras of that era were modeled after).
Canon did not make identification of the models of rangefinders easy, particularly in the early years. No model numbers were written on the camera bodies. If you want to know what model your camera you have -- and where it fits into the Canon lineage -- you'll benefit from having this book around. Dechert identifies the (sometimes subtle) difference between the models and even provides production dates and figures, when they are known.
Dechert has achieved great credibility within the community of historical Canon camera aficionados. His discussions with the individuals, or pioneers, within Canon are also documented in the book, putting a real human touch and historical context around all the facts he presents.
Photos (black and white) are provided which provide a good visual reference to many of the points he discusses regarding camera features and mechanical functions.
