Inexcusably out of print, a great encyclopedic overview

While some argue for the modern musical (arguably dating from THE BLACK CROOK in 1866) as the first original and enduring American contribution to world culture, it is actually the Modern Mystery (dating from Edgar Alan Poe's C. August Dupin stories a decade before) which has the strongest claim (if you don't count Chocolate and The Potato). In encyclopedic form, this great hard and paperback book compiled by William L DeAndrea, initially in 1994, is the best single overview of the genre I have ever found. Virtually every major writer and work is treated here - sometimes extremely well cross referenced for even greater depth. Whether as light reading, reference or text book use, this is an indispensable book for any fan of the genre or anyone simply wanting more information on a favorite mystery author, book, play or movie. It's inexcusable that it has been allowed to fall out of print for as long as it has, and cries out for an updated new, thicker edition; there's not a thing in the latest edition you'd want to omit.
