Finding Your Father's War by Jonathan Gawne (2006)

This book has saved me so much time in researching my Dad's footsteps during his military career. He was in a unit that was part of the Combat Engineers that today is called Special Forces. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, 3 Purple Hearts. He told me all the stories but I never wrote down all the details and now he has passed away and I'm begining to do the leg work to document his time in the Army and during WWII. I found this book to already be invaluble in getting details of where to go and which steps will lead me to a deadend, saving alot of time and frustration. It is very informative and breaks everything down to basics. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is beginning to search for information or who has already begun the journey of tracing a career in the United States Military. I have already met several people that have become friends that I probably would not have met if not for this book pointing me in their direction. The book breaks down the ensignias,ranks,medals,chain of command of the different Army units, where to search for individual records, Army Organizational Records,Records, Evidence of a Soldiers Service. The 470 photos, charts and narration are a bonus.
