    Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 6 (CD, Feb-2012, Decca)
    16 sept. 2015
    Fascinating Performance
It is not heavy, it is not lean. It is quite powerful and quite driven, yet not thunderous like one expects from a German orchestra. Chailly provides a well recorded performance that is unlike any other. The orchestra is incredibly precise, and Chailly clearly has complete command of them. But he also has a hint of the classical style that the early music conductors emphasize by refusing to engage in a expansive or spontaneous performance. Instead, it is very meticulous and filled with motion and drive. That this is the same conductor from the 1980s who was largely not very exciting is hard to believe. That this is the same orchestra that is known for its performances with Masur makes this performance seem almost like a different orchestra all together. Yet, it may be the case that Chailly has proven here that he is a far more exciting and risk taking conductor that Masur with the same orchestra. And that he actually makes them sound more spectacular than Masur did. In fact, the argument may now be made that Chailly under his tenure in Leipzig has been the orchestra's greatest conductor since World War II. Who would have thought this from a conductor who was not exactly an exciting one following Haitink in Amsterdam or in his many recordings made with other orchestras during that time period. It may be - Chailly has gotten stronger with age.
Scriabin: Etudes Complete by Chitose Okashiro (CD, Apr-1996, Pro Piano)
    26 avr. 2016
Not what I was hoping for
A pianist I think who has made transcriptions of a Mahler and Tchaikovsky symphony, I thought the Scriabin etudes would have some excitement. Unfortunately atleast a few high level performances. But the playing at times is awkward, lacks good structure, and doesn't really move me.
NEW - Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 by Orchestre la Suisse Romande
    26 avr. 2016
    Good Sound and Great Conductor
Never one to have a "big name," Janowski is one of today's best conductors. This Bruckner performance is first class - big warm sound, and a wonderful command of the orchestra. Pentatone did a good job with the sound even on just a two channel stereo. I look forward to his other symphonies when I get a chance.
