Great Fun - even Better if you see Cap America:The First Avenger first
I'd seen this in the theatrical run. Had only Liked it and hadn't seen it since.
My gateway to The Avengers was Ironman - from the first film I was hooked on R B Downey Jr's pitch-perfect portrayal of that character. I hadn't been much of a Cap America fan - he's SUCH a straight-arrow ! So I'd treated the Captain America movies as asides to the Avengers storyline.
But Marvel hasn't.
The Winter Soldier is Great Fun on its own. Great Avengers tone. Having the Black Widow on board in a central role is always a Big help ! (when will she get her on movie vehicle, Marvel ?) PLUS, Cap - wait for it - Breaks The Rules !!! Does Not follow chain of command.
The mystery through much of the movie is, Who the heck is the Winter Soldier ?? I won't be a spoiler here, so say no more. But this script is clearly based on a back story, and I didn't know it.
I'd just gotten and seen Captain America:The First Avenger, which preceded this one. I'd never seen it before. It exceeded my expectations (which admittedly were modest), but that's where the backstory is laid out. So it Really adds depth to Winter Soldier if you see that first.
Which is my recommendation. Avengers fans, do yourself a favor and include both of these in your library and in your list of Avengers movies. Both are well worth it !
