1913 to 2021: the More Things Changed . . .
Good history and decent fiction educating the reader and the public on how women and immigrants moved America forward on worker rights and equality in the early 20th Century (set in 1913-14). Big Annie is a compelling heroine compared to Joan of Arc. My favorite character was Eva -- full of spunk, mature beyond her years and, like Annie, a force of nature.
Reading the book in 2021, I was struck by the parallels between James MacNaughton, the self-centered capitalist scumbag who managed the main mine, the Calumet & Hecla, and latter day scumbag ego-tripper Jeff Bezos. Both did everything in their power to prevent labor from organizing, bust unions, keep working Americans down, ignore safety and fail to grant common decency to those in their employ. Both have blood on their hands: MacNaughton was fine with workplace maimings and mortalities being part and parcel of working the underground copper mines of Michigan's Upper Peninsula; Bezos at least 6 workers who perished in a warehouse in the 12/21 tornadoes across southern Illinois and the lower Midwest -- because Amazon was too cheap to erect tornado shelters in his warehouses accessible and big enough to shelter all workers, and inattention to tornado drills.
Meanwhile, Kellogg Cereal unions were on strike in Michigan for a fair share of profits.
We might like to think that yesterday's labor exploitation and unsafe conditions where workers needless risk life and limb are behind us, but recent experience shows that's far from the truth. The book is a good reminder that workers with a just cause and reasonable requests deserve out support, and government needs to keep capital honest by enforcing safe working conditions.
Here's to Big Annie and the immigrant families who mined the metal in Calumet and built the cars in the Ford factories in Detroit. It's on us today to honor the fallen innocents to achieve meaningful change. If Bezos can afford to build a rocket to shoot his wannabe space cowboy persona into orbit -- and rake in record profits during the pandemic -- he can afford safe working conditions for his workers and contractors, all of them, always.

Challenging
Below average design, not user-friendly, hard to tune and antenna barely works on top of confusing controls
