All's well that ends well
Installing from the CD was impossible. I got all kinds of error messages. So I downloaded from the Adobe site. Then I had to license the software, which was a couple more steps, since I use the student/teacher version (legitimately!). I had to use the product code from the CD box that I received and give my academic credentials. Now all is well.
So, in my experience, it is not necessary to receive the CD. All you need is the product code on the box (and to prove that you are a student or teacher).
