shakespeare and company by Sylvia Beach
Sylvia Beach writes about her American Bookstore in Paris, Shakespeare and Company. She was the first publisher of James Jouce's Ulysses. She tells of the artists and writers in Paris during the 20 and 30's. A most wonderful time to be in Paris, a time never to be seen again. Her patron's at the store were the likes of Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, Andre Gide, Thomas Wolfe and of course James Joyce. She speaks of the discussions in cafes and salons. If you love books then you must have the writers and this certainly paints a picture of a fabulous time with fabulous writers in a very fabulous city.
