Best that I could find that runs on AA batteries
Instead of depending on specialized rechargeable batteries, I was looking for a camera that would run on regular AA's. The SX160 IS is the best AA powered camera that I could find. I use "Energizer Ultimate Lithium" cells and they last pretty long.
Images and video are both very high quality. To successfully take video at the highest resolution, use a reasonably fast SD card. I am using a 32GB card; I don't know if it supports any larger sizes. The only big limitation for video is that you can't connect an external microphone. The audio is recorded from the camera's internal microphones only. (The camera also has a small speaker to let you hear audio on playback.)
The pop up flash works fine. If you don't pop it up, then flash is not used -- that's simple!
There is a trick to getting sharp pictures. You must partially depress the shutter release and hold it for a second or two to make the camera auto focus. If you do, the pictures will be quite good. If you just snap the shutter, the pictures can be out of focus.
The camera has many different modes and settings, most of which you will not need. There is a way to do manual focus, but it is hard to find. You will have to read the manual, that's why they call it manual focus. :-)
This camera has no networking and no GPS. Once you have taken your pictures, you can use a mini USB cable to connect it to any computer, and folders of pictures or videos will be available as if it was a big thumb drive. Or, you can remove the SD card and just plug in to your computer.
With a certain kind of HDMI cable, you can play video directly to a TV set. The video has excellent resolution.
The self timer works fine.
There is no viewfinder, and you might have to shade the display with your hand to see it in bright sunlight.

Light, fun, and bordering on silly
This film is funny and wholesome. There is something about the way this film portrays a loving happily married couple that I really like.

This size of braid works particularly well for desoldering through hole components.
